We were up at Alpental yesterday. If you are off the pack you could get a good sluff started with little problem. Then it snowed a few more inches. The snow was soft for at least the first foot or so with several hard burried layers. 3-5' on the ground at the base but a lot od soutnern exposures are bare to about 5k. 7-10' at paradise.

Mapsource (Garmin) has a 24,000 series for national parks west which includes Rainier and the grneral Topo series that covers the us in 125,000 resolution. For a gps I think the general series is all you really need. You used to be able to get them on Kazza but things are a bit tighter now. On rainier what you really care about are crevasses and they do not show up on either. You can mark your trail fine with the 125,000's.

Until last year they alwaysclosed in the spring for lack of skiers not lack of snow. We were at Alpental yesterday great conditions and only a few dozen folks on the mountain.

liting that last 75yd TD was pretty pathetic.

Mountainsmith used to make the sled in question and they rented them at Marmot, expensive and heavy but worked well. Someone bought the dies and is still making them. I made one out of a k-mart special, old rei pack waist band, kids bike seat and some old cx ski poles. Like most I used it to haul gear or kids on ski trips. You need a skeg to traverse and pickets ice up unless treated. If you are just going up an alsaka glaicier the toy sleds and rope work fine as does a haul bag. You need stiff poles for downhill.

Great today, especially once folks started going to the game. North BC powder on top then a bit cruddy but still nice icy on the bottom, Sun no rocks or hazards. Nice turns off upper exterminator too. Still caught the game on the way down.

The snow is so thick and heavy now that every one should be uber carful. BC skis do not release any easier than boards and even a rondenee release would leaveyou at the bottom of a pit of wet cenment. Last weekend I could not even descent any thing less than 30 degrees and if you stoped you had to kick your way out.

He is just the same as W just dosen't have any handlers like Connie to tell him to STFU.
