In the 1930's FDR did try to pack the court BUT he was defeated in congress which his party controlled by more than 2/3d's. It is true that he appointedDouglas bu Ike appointed Warren and Truman Black (hint he was conservative) The first attempt to pack the Court was by Nixon with Hanswoerth and Carswell who were defeated by a Democratic Senate but we endedup with Burger and Reinquest instead. Reagans appointments were not particularly idelogical nor were Carters, Fords, or Clintons (GOP controled Senate then). Bush I gave us Scalia and Thomas who were although neither said so at their hearings. I can pretty much guarentee that Roberts will be just as reactionary, which is different from conservative (conservatives want to keep things the way they are reactionaries want to take things back).

There was a time when Supreme Court Justices were selected for their knowledge, experience and temperment. If that were the situation now I would not have a problem with going along with the presidents choices. Now, however, the emphasis seems to be on installing as young a Justice as possible with the presidents idelogical bent in order to influence future decisions. This is a legitmate exercise of presidential power but it does not follow that those with different ideoligies should defer. When a justice is selected for their biases and positions on cases sure to be determined by the Court it should be permissable to object on those same grounds by filibuster or similar means. There are thousands of attorneys and judges who make decisions based on law without an idelogical agenda and each of these would recive wide support in the Senate. When decisions are made on the basis of ideolgy the result will be division lawbreaking.

It depends on the trail. The new middle fork trail has been upgraded to horsie specs and is like a small road now NTB use could not hurt it more. What frosts me is that places like the Redmond Watershed and Cougar Mountain trails are open to horses but not bikes. I some dork galloping a horse down cavehole one time that would have killed anyone running or walking there, bikes have a lot more control. Bikes used to be allowed under the wilderness act. I think the real effect would be to prohibit horses from unsuitable areas.
