I'm not sure I follow this argument. Are you saying the US govt is stable because they monopolize the use of force? It would seem the second part of your sentence undermines the first. Or are you arguing that the our govt is unstable? that's it - no government is going to be stable if it can be overthrown at any moment (revolutionary-era france, for example) - our government is stable though b/c it has restricted gun ownership enough to preclude violent revolution, as mentioned many times above
-
no doubt - and just look at the all the good they've done in creating stable societies in such exotic places as somalia, afghanistan, the congo, etc. succesful government are that way, in part, because they monopolize the use of force - when any asshole can waste an entire school or shopping mall on a whim, how stable is your society going to be?

suprised no one's thrown this classic in yet? [video:youtube]

closest i ever came to be knocked out was a primus concert - seconds after les flicked me off for screamign "you suck!" for the 1000th time a 14 year mosher rang my bell big time "funny thing about weekends when you're unemployed - they don't mean so much, 'cept you get to hang out w/ your working friends" "suck on this" is their best album, imho
-
not true! i just likely wouldn't be "free"ing it
-
oddly, that anchor inspired me plenty - 4 big ass chickenheads, plus i was in a stance where i could hold all the weight on my body pretty easy - plus, geoff never falls! you'll notice, kev, i rarely claim to "free" anything - i like having fun when climbing, and given my strength and technique, that requires resting pretty often it boggles me mind that you find free firsum easier to lead then blownout PP, yeah, riverside's way up there on the edge of grassy ledge and you'll never have to wait in line! the anchor's not too bad currently either and will get replaced soon enough i bet.
-
yes why the quotation marks, 8-ball?
-
word - no harder than blownout firsure - you done riverside, cc?
-
the bluebook value is 10b - never climbed in the valley, but at beacon that's plenty hard - much harder than windsurfer i thought, which is the same rating
-
Love the pics! (Got more Zod pics underworld?) Hey- Except for Ivan's massive weight, please tell me there was there a solid upwards piece?! no, but w/ 10 feet of 40 degree slab to climb to the top, if he had fallen, we both pretty much would have deserved death

NY Times - Mountain Climbing Bad for the Brain
ivan replied to Mike_Gauthier's topic in Climber's Board
So where do I fit in this mess??? the only good thing about voyager, the show where the chick captain got everybody lost maybe climbing's bad for the brain 'cuz it pisses our wives off, who in turn take to slowly poisoning us w/ lead n' arsenic in our food? -
Now now, be careful, you know what often happens right after a person is caught saying something like that.... actually i don't remember i DO remember gary hart challenging the press to catch him cheating and, BLANG, the next day they nailed him though
-
i thought it was "the real america?"
-
if i had a dollar for everytime i took a dumbass fall like this...
-
holy shit, was that a rational, coherent statement that just appeared in spray?
-
ye standarde outer space the smallish ledge just below this place wasn't half as pimp'n though - it'd be best just to have a 70 m rope so you can finish off - simulclimbing would be fine too if you don't do the hard start to the last pitch
-
as noted in another thread, there is more than sufficient evidence of brain damage among climbers in the postings found on this website... hey! but i did use a LOCKING biner for my first clove hitch, right? doesn't look like i locked it though
-
one of the other threads in the oregon forum here said it would stay closed through to till next summer b/c of downed trees - it said the tj trail would also be closed, though obviously that would be a lot easier to ignore. http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/840818/Mt_Hood_In_Nov#Post840818 would be nice if someone coudl confirm that the sky's not falling
-
I have never quite seen the Eliot like that... Usually, I am snowboarding down from snowdome... That sure looks like a tasty adventure.... Perhaps next year I can convince someone to trip out in that mess ... dude, you can't go climbing in there - that's like, where the skull n' cross-bones are on the topo in the "climbing the cascades volcanoes" book n' stuff!
-
and one of the rare times, when belaying a second from above, that i didn't top-rope my boy through the anchor!
-
ah, an overdue pic from 2 weekends ago - a somewhat unorthodox, not quite-ready for john long chickenhead anchor just below snow creek wall's top
-
geoff in da bidness on the money pitch of outer space what do you mean a 60 meter rope don't finish off outer space from library ledge?!? chickenhead anchor (take that fucking john long!) just a couple feet below the top of the snow creek wall
-
i'm asking 'cuz i'm not certain if it's appropriate for me to have a hard-on right now, see?
-
...and by self-described "liberals" in every instance. dude, ice cube personally gave me the right to drop the n-bomb he also handed me a gat to shoot him with
-
true or false? - the north side is currently a pain in the ass to access w/ a closed road and trail due to recent fire? coulior - is that a pregnant ass hoe you're currently sporting!?!
