[TR] Beacon Rawk - Riverside (or why I  Pink) 10/19/2008
ivan replied to ivan's topic in Oregon Cascades
not in any conventinal sense of the word on lead i hung from my fifi several times and frenched a couple of the pieces that had taken away the nice finger pockets - did manage to free it on tr afterwards, but still didn't do it perfect - i embrace the suck and become stronger despite it! again, if i stuck only to the shit at beacon that i can free in good form, i'd only be doing a handful of routes, and it's too cool a place to go ignoring so many funktacular routes, no? -

there are several shown in the olson book, many w/ ___________'s for route-names that make me interested - a very cool area for sure as the rock is much kewler up above grassy ledges as it's coarser and much more textured, as i discovered after removing most of the flesh from my right hand and bleeding like a pig all over riverside the pod features are wacky - i feel very, very sore today from the workout of full on, half-assed body jams -
beautiful underworld - where? my fav of the weekend
-
wonder if that takes into account our importing of columbian coke?
-
i disagree - hostilities between the n and s after secession would have been inevitable (how to divide up the west? return of usa property? navigation on the mississippi?), so the south's most natural industrial ally would have been britian, which already relied heavily on the south for cotton and would have been happy to have developed texas oil-fields too also, it's unlikely the south would have stayed in its borders - there was a very strong desire in the csa to conquer mexico and further south, but the war precluded this - undoubtedly they would have taken mexico (and even more oil - maybe venezuela too?) if they hadn't have had to fight w/ the north how woudl ww1 have turned out again? the usa would NOT have ridden to the rescue in 1917 and trench warfare would have happend in north america (hell, the end of civil war was pretty much already like 1915 france!) would blacks in the south have turned to communism to acquire their freedom?
-
um - texas and the shit-ton of oil in the gulf of mexico? - america bankrolled the allies for oil during ww2 - also, the north and south likely would have warred w/ each other as a result of the cascading violence associated w/ the alliance system in europe - trenchlines in maryland beyotches!
-
awesome - now if only there was a vial of anthrax you had to crawl through in there too! maybe coat the whole thing in vaseline? put a guillotine at the exit?

660,000 troops killed in an unnecessary war--along with an unknown number of southern civilians. Cities burned to the ground by a marauding general. Habeas Corpus suspended. Newspapers closed at gunpoint. Editors arrested. Slavery abolished? Yea right--in all but 4 northern states. Federal troops massacring civilians by the hundreds on the streets of New York. And even through all of this...still time for his troops to annihilate native Americans out west. but he did wear a very cool hat and the beard! seriously, is it possible to have a sweet beard like lincoln's and still be an asshole? i like the historical what-if game that goes along w/ allowing the south to suceed - how do ww1 and 2 go, w/ the south likely allied w/ britian and the north w/ germany? how does the whole shit-storm of the 20th century get shittier. isn't it strange that, by doing the hypothetically right thing, the whole world could end up worse off?

nice! explains your absence from beacon this weekend that there is a big old heap of driving for 3 pitches of ice, eh?

pink - have you done any of the routes between riverside and the party ledge? -
Trip: Beacon Rawk - Riverside (or why I  Pink) Date: 10/19/2008 Trip Report: the norseman riverside bitches! funktacular beginnings awkward "where in the hell?" surely i brought a pair of balls w/ me? starting into the most entertaining traverse thanx to crackman for taking all the shots, and to geoff as always for the patient belays and pink, it was well worth my time to finally get over to this history lesson: the comfy, mossy ledge at the base of this gem was called the "mushroom ledge" by opdycke for their fungal proclivities back in the 80s, apparently prior to the establishment of the land of the little people anchor situation - an old 1/4 head bolt w/ decent hanger and a large, sturdy pin - junk webbing at the moment, plus a new bit of cord and bail biner - there's room for a bomber nut to back it all up w/ too - looks pretty easy to top out from here, but i shudder whenever i think of re-entering the fuck-awful amphitheater of remorse cold this morning!!! Gear Notes: Approach Notes: little wing => fear of flying => jill's thrill => riverside

i also liked how mccain assured his one supporter at a rally recently who said "obama's an arab" by saying "no, no - he's a good-guy" - as if the 2 were mutually exclusive, or that he IS an arab, so don't vote for him, but don't hate him either?
-
i guess when your ankle's busted yer too slow to catch the wily snafflehunds!
-
holy shit - dude definietly needs to go out and play the lotto 2night! you don't get much luckier! nice to see one a happy ending to one of these stories finally

the secret is adding the jizz-packet and then boiling it to reduce the water content by half, leaving a delectable salt-slurry clinging to the pulpified noodles :yum:
-
so he's probably not gonna vote liberal then, eh?
-
you finally gonna publish that pink my little pony memoir you've had stashed in your hope-chest all these years?
-

have you had it on your fingers before john? i haven't zapped my toes, but 5 years ago a couple fingers - they didn't blister up, but felt numb for about a week, like i was wearing gloves or something - there were no long term problems though - i stayed out of the hills for probably a month afterwards, adn yeah, it still seemed quick to get cold again. how are they looking a couple days later?
-
damn john- nice! why do you think your toe froze?

i hate illinios nazis!

good words there bill the cool thing about climbing is the nature of the "apprenticeship" when you have to pretty much work to find a mentor to teach you the art - he's def got the requisite sense of adventure and i remember doing exactly the same stuff, leading on gear we found at a garage sale w/o a iota of instruction
