another option for the N ridge baker plan, do it in 2 days but do it as a cross over. go with light overnight packs. Day 1 hike in and cross the glacier to the ridge in the daylight (nice for the complicated glacier travel) and climb up the ridge to some bivy spots about a rope length or two below the ice wall. next morning, climb up down and out to the car. solid forecast required. this would make your summit day easier and you won't be so tired afterwards so that you may actually climb something on your day 4. west face of south early winter spires is my favorite line on the west side if the spires. late start is OK. east side of spires, east buttress of south early winter spire. Longer day and earlier start required. stuff harder than 5.9 can be aided.

Whey protein powder, anyone use it?
genepires replied to keenwesh's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
no physiology degree there is reliable evidence to show that the body will burn protein sources before fat reserves, when carb reserves are depleted, in endurance events. Most of the serious sports nutrition drinks contain some protein, in addition to carbs, to allow the body to burn these ingested proteins instead of muscle mass. But one does not need much protein to stave off the catabolism. you are still young. you may be able to get away with it but putting a little vanilla whey in with your Gatorade is a cheap way to make a inferior (but still working) sports drink. I don't think I could get away without a decent sport drink though. Look into Costco. they got 5 pound bags (something like 60 servings) for $40. -
in case you are unable to read BS, the above is BS. except for the ticks.

Road to Darrington Washed out in Mud Slide, 3 Dead
genepires replied to OlympicMtnBoy's topic in Climber's Board
on a much smaller scale, this illustration looks like the slide into the river right by the pilchuck turnoff. the one that took out the original turnoff. Are these kinds of slides usually caused by rivers eating at the base? I thought that the Oso slide was not started by the river erosion. -
Where is it not raining that's cheap to get to?!?!
genepires replied to OlympicMtnBoy's topic in Climber's Board
maybe you want more exotic but 20% chance of showers, mostly cloudy and highs of 60F sound pretty good at vantage. chance of showers, MC and high of 50 sound really good at smith too. you wanna climb in the blistering sun? what kind of warshintonian are you? -
I know a guy who is in the market for some crampons. maybe you will get a PM soon.

Road to Darrington Washed out in Mud Slide, 3 Dead
genepires replied to OlympicMtnBoy's topic in Climber's Board
same thoughts. saw a satellite photo on the news of the area and it looks like the slide was to the north and far east or west of his house. Could not see the side road that his house is on which is to the south of the hwy. hope that he will chime in soon. -
Name-calling + Ad hominem attacks + Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content + Knee-jerk contradiction + Trolling for a reaction = spray can we have a no rules forum? maybe a sign a waiver to verify your mental toughness to handle the name calling, attacks and trolls? A "let the reader beware" forum?

Agreed........no wait. nix that.

-20F FF wide bag. tight bags are irritating especially if you are a stomach sleeper. MH tends to overbuild their tents. looks like they put extra crap into their sleeping bags too?

I keep things real simple. 1.snowboarding in my major winter thing. started boarding 24 years ago but mostly now it is with my 6yo kid. 2.pick things up and put them down. 3.entertain my kid and appease my wife. if I get a couple days a month of climbing, that is a full calendar.

http://www.iciclevillage.com/leavenworth-weather-webcams/ the cam with SW in the label points towards Tumwater canyon and towards the icicle. still snow in the put put course.

damn I missed out on a math problem. I think that both of you are right it is just that you both are talking different cirumstances. predicting the future outcome over a set number of experiments (Pat) vs the prob of one event (rob)

tie middle of rope into anchor. one strand coming down you attach some kind of ascender or other device to grab the rope if you fall. some devices may need a chest harness to keep it upright and flowing smoothly. other devices flow up well without. you may need to experiment to figure out how to make it flow well. other strand tie fig 8 knots that you can clip into the harness as you go up in case the mechanical device fails. maybe every 20feet or however much you need to feel comfortable.

I miss the "clownpuncher" insults. that shite was funny.

I know that some vendors have had demos in the icicle. and if you are willing to drive, they had one that I know of at the redmond VW. Maybe talk to the leavenworth mountain something or other and the vertical world to see if these events are going on soon.

no idea of where you live or your needed time frame, but many rock gyms (and some outside venues) have small impromptu get togethers where rock shoe companies bring in demos. there is your chance to try on many different sizes and types. where do you live bird bird?

right on, something worth reading in spray.

Since I am regularly the recipient of words like idiot, dumbass, dumbfuck, bafoon, etc., etc.--not to mention the constant attacks on my intellect and things like "you should move to Alabama"--it shouldn't surprise anyone that I return the favor from time to time. As for the more hateful and vulgar words that your friend TTK seems so fond of, yes, he crosses the line way too often--and it's not a line that's all that hard to see, Ivan. Again, I really don't mind most of the words you & yours call me or put in my mouth--and I'll give them right back--but there are a handful that cross the line. They aren't words I say or think, so yes, I do get upset when someone uses them to caricature me this way. You should tell him, as his friend, to exercise more self-control and to knock it off. point 1 Be the change you want to see in the world. if you don't like it, don't do it. simple. point 2 If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. If the nature of spray offends you, don't frequent spray. simple also. these points are probably irrelevant as I suspect that you like these verbal attacks and rebuttals. I also suspect that you don't really care about "community" and care more about self serving ego boosting. just my theory as I have never met you. feel free to call me names though. see point 2 above.
