olyclimber Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 John Scurlock tried to post about this, but apparently the board hiccuped. "was just wondering if that shuksan mural still existed, if anyone had ever seen it, etc., I was looking around on the internet and couldn't find it." I searched around and discovered that it was apparently an Ira Spring commissioned photo. I didn't find out the fate of the photo though. I don't think it is still hanging or if it even still exists. genepires Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 there used to be a large photo of that same aspect of shuksan in a photo or a book store in lake louise. It had a stuffed bear that you could have your photo taken with. Always thought it was weird how in a land of big mountains, they used a yank mountain. Quote
j_b Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 It's not uncommon at all to see pictures of Shuksan in commercial establishments in places where local mountains are bigger and mightier. Once I found one in a tiny restaurant in Uspallata near the Argentinian Andes. I heard/read that Shuksan was among the most photographed mtns in the world. May be because that Lake Ann view is super classic? Quote
Recycled Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 My all-time oddest glimpse of that mural was walking into run-down 60's style motel in the middle of the desert (Gila Bend, AZ) and seeing an entire wall (10x10 feet+) covered by a Shuksan photo-mural. That was probably about 15 years ago and now the motel is gone. It was truly a WTF? moment. Quote
olyclimber Posted November 30, 2010 Author Posted November 30, 2010 In just a few searches I found where that mural in Grand Central resulted in people ending up in the PNW just to see it. Here is an example: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A0DEFDF1231F930A3575BC0A960948260 Quote

JBo6 Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 I had a roommate who had an entire wall covered in a wallpaper image of Shuksan, pretty damn cool. Quote

DPS Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Saw a TV commercial for FreeCreditReport.Com. The silly band was playing in a cowboy bar with a mural of...yup, you guessed it, Mt Shuksan in the background. Quote
jordansahls Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 I think my favorite Shuksan spotting happened about a year ago on the late night show with Conan O'Brian. They were doing a sketch about skiing using Shuksan as their background. It was a bit strange. Quote

ScaredSilly Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Slightly off topic but while living in Antibes, France in 1996 I noticed a McDonalds being built. One day I noticed a mural going up. Oddly enough the mural was of Delicate Arch. Which for me was funny cause I had moved there after finishing grad school in Utah. Quote
Lowell_Skoog Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 John, I'm in touch with Ira Spring's family from time to time. I could ask if they know anything about the mural, if you like. Quote
johndavidjr Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Perhaps you're referring to a giant Kodak-sponsored back-lite display at Grand Central of a color photograph that was changed on a frequent basis from 1960s to about 1980. No doubt Shuksan was displayed at some point on this sign, now long gone and not missed. Quote
klenke Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 The classic Shuksan angle, as seen above, was even featured as the backdrop of a Nintendo racing game, one of the newer versions of Super Mario Cart, I think. You'd race around the track and the mountain would come into view and slide left or right in the background depending on which way the racetrack turned at a bend. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Speaking of, spotted a Shuksan poster at a trekking lodge on the Everest trek in Nepal! also one on the annapurna trek; seen it in Kashmir and southern India as well. New Zealand and Europe to... so anybody seen it in Africa? Curious if it or Mt. Fuji are the most reproduced real mountains in the world? (assuming the Paramount is the most reproduced "mountain") Quote
akhalteke Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I saw a picture of Mt Shuksan from picture lake in a podunk town in Lithuania and also in Moshi Tanzania, so Hugh yes I have seen it in Africa. Quote
John_Scurlock Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 Thanks everyone, Lowell I'll shoot you an email. Kelly B. & Russ D. told me of seeing a Shuksan photo hanging on the wall of a teahouse in Nepal some years ago, as someone else mentioned... crazy.. Quote
johndavidjr Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Photo in question was displayed Oct/Nov. 1969 "The Kodak Colorama" sign has an historical Web site where you can ferret-out the photo. http://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/features/coloramas/colorama.html Nothing against photos of Shuksan, but the Kodak signage was more Times Square than Grand Central Station.
