Governments have now demanded - and will get - an independent review into how the IPCC conducts its work and how well its conclusions stand up to scrutiny.

The vice-chairman of the UN's climate science panel has admitted it made a mistake in asserting that Himalayan glaciers could disappear by 2035.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) included the date in its 2007 assessment of climate impacts.

A number of scientists have recently disputed the 2035 figure, and Jean-Pascal van Ypersele told BBC News that it was an error and would be reviewed.

"Colleagues say that the reason Professor Phil Jones has refused Freedom of Information requests is that he may have actually lost the relevant papers.

Professor Jones told the BBC yesterday there was truth in the observations of colleagues that he lacked organisational skills, that his office was swamped with piles of paper and that his record keeping is ‘not as good as it should be’.

The data is crucial to the famous ‘hockey stick graph’ used by climate change advocates to support the theory."

GOP's Inhofe initiates witch-hunt to criminalize 17 leading climate scientists

"Senator James Inhofe, ranking Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee, has gone a step beyond promoting his long-notorious global warming denialist propaganda. He is now using the resources of the Senate committee to seek opportunities to criminalize the actions of 17 leading scientists who have been associated with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment reports. A report released by Inhofe’s staff on February 23 outlines this classic Joe McCarthyite witch-hunt: page after page of incorrect and misleading statements, a list of federal laws that allegedly may make scientists subject to prosecution by the U.S. Justice Department"

When is enough harassment of climate scientists, enough? Stop the goons before it's too late!

I think that their work should be looked at. There is no question that in the last 10,000 years, when there was 50-100' of ice in Yosemite valley and Woolly Mammoths ranged the plains - things have been warming up, the question is "Is human activity contributing to speeding things up?" and if so, what should we do about it.

Actually, the question is shouldn't most of the pollution controls and clean energy we are talking about implementing and developing as a means to *hopefully* curb global warming be done anyway? And why are global warming denialists entire environmental strategy summed up by "whatever is good for business is our only concern", i.e. "kill, drill and dig".

It's total bullshit that we as a country are still operating with the energy policy Jimmy Carter laid down, with some tweaks to tear it apart by Reagen. "Conservation" seems to be a dirty word. In fact, during Bush 2, da gobment was giving tax write offs for small business owners to buy the huge Expeditions, Durangos and Suburbans.

The least we could do is categorize those things that would cost little to zero to implement and do those NOW while the debate continues. Somehow, it often seems that in the US, they manage by crisis... and if it ain't a crisis, and it ain't money going home to the district, then it's just ignored.

Until it becomes a crisis.

The problem is that's how Americans operate. The national debt is a much more immediate and relevant issue for Americans, and the outcry against it and the politicians who perpetuate it is inaudible. As long as the choice is between doing the right thing and doing what's best for me right now, most people will take the latter. It's hard to blame the politicians for not being any different from their constituents. What's best for them right now is to get re-elected by doing what's best for the constituents right now. Until America becomes less self-centered and now-centered, this is our reality. Our fight is not really against climate change or the national debt, it needs to be against selfishness and complacency. It's hard to teach old dogs new tricks, so raise your kids to choose what's right instead of what's easy, challenge others to do likewise, and one day we may get something done.

great find, fw - i'm sure the 56 year old married to the chick less than half his age (and the baby-mama herself) didn't have any pre-existing craziness going on
