But HOW do yo uncage your soul? Is there a specific mantra you use? Some solicitation for strength from above?

This man needs real answers, not vague inadequate hard-to-follow instructions.

When one uncages the soul, is it a decision? And who is deciding? Is it you, or is God playing a part in it, or does the desire to uncage come from God? Are you God himself, masquerading as a human? And if this is true, then one would simply be praying to oneself, yes? As in, "uncage my soul, me."

I also wonder if God thinks climbing is trivial, and if we tried praying to him, he'd let his vengeance out on us and rip out all our pro or slice our rope just as we're hanging on a mono pocket 120 feet in the air on an overhang super-duper pumped out cuz we're wasting his precious time while he's trying to save sailors heading to Bethlehem, or killing bad people who don't believe in him? So like then prayer would actually kill us then?

I don't knwo about this prayer stuff. Sounds kinda scary when I think about it. I think I'll just keep my mouth shut.

Once upon a time not so long ago:

Tommy used to work on the docks

union's been on strike

He's down on his luck - It's tough

so tough.

Gina works the diner all day

working for her man

She brings home her pay for love

for love.

She says: We've got to hold on to what we've got

'Cause it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not.

We've got each other and that's a lot for love -

We'll give it a shot.

We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer

Take my hand and we'll make it

I swear - livin' on a prayer.

Tommy got his six string in hock.

Now he's holding in what he used to make it talk -

So tough

it's tough.

Gina dreams of running away

when she cries in the night

Tommy whispers: Baby

it's okay

someday.

We've got to hold on to what we've got . . .

We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer

. . .

We've got to hold on ready or not

You live for the fight when it's all that you've got.

We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer

. . .

We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer

. . .

We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer

. . .

THis one works for me...

"Dear God, I really fokked myself this time...i can kinda use some help here...i promise i'll try to not do this again...Please please let that be a jug up there...."

I really appreciate that everyone has taken this very seriously. I thought about posting it on Rock climbing.com but thought that this is the type of shit that I would run into. I had this slight notion that the individuals on cascadeclimbers where of a bit higher intellect and integrity. It takes a sorry soul to make fun and jokes about such an honest question. I really get tired of all the weekend warriors sitting in their office posting B.S. about this 5.8 they did and all the experience they have and making jokes of honest posts and questions, and taking seriously post like "Tape or No tape". Now once again if anyone has any REAL prayers I would greatly appreciate it.

P.S. I hope that al of you who spent all that time putting together those dumb poems actually got out and did something this last weekend.

man, seems like someone gotta little too much starch in their collar/shorts...sheesh... thumbs_down.gif

You really need to ask for some formulaic quote to repeat to your God? Personally, when i speak to my God, i prefer to use my own words and my own thoughts...kinda like personal, you know...and i certainly don't go spraying on an internet bullshit site about what i said to Him...

you need to grow up/lighten up and not wear your faith on your sleeve around here...its kinda offensive...

Sing to the tune of Janis Joplin's Mercedes Benz:

Oh Lord, won’t you find me a big fat old bolt?

My friends all clip sport routes I must be a dolt.

I've put pro in flared pin scars with tipped out old Friends.

If I don't find some pro soon I'll soon meet my end.

Oh Lord, won’t you find me a crack that don’t hurt?

I’m clawing my way up this one full of dirt.

My fingers are bleedin’ and I tore my new shirt.

So Lord, won’t you find me a crack that don't hurt.

Oh Lord won't you find me some holds for my feet?

I'm sketchin' on slabs like a dog that's in heat.

My calves are on fire and there's no where to stand.

So please find a jug for my foot or my hand.

Oh Lord, won't you show me a sign I'm on route.

My belayer's got frostbite cuz he dropped his left boot.

The sunset is coming and the topo is lost,

So Lord, won't you help us to the top of this choss?

Ode to a Pink Tricam

Oh Pink's the one I love to place

when I'm alone way up in space

on some exposed and airy face.

They sink where other gear won't go.

When all you've got is manky pro,

This tricam saves your butt from woe.

But it's often hard to get them out;

They make your second moan and shout

And wave his nut tool 'round about

But that's why you're the one on lead

Your problems are a different breed

As long as someone does the deed...

"Oh quit your whimpering," you rumble,

"And get it out or there'll be trouble"

"Get to work now, on the double!"

Although it sometimes takes a while,

They do come out with vim and guile,

(or chiselling and curses vile.)

Pink will do what all the rest.

Won't do when they're put to the test.

Oh pink tricams are just the best!

Hi Bryan,

Your query seems like a fair one to ask, and I'm sorry that you didn't get a good reply (at least on this post). Being an atheist myself, I can't recommend any particular prayer. My only suggestion here is to not automatically assume that your partner is religious -- it can be a bit uncomfortable for us non-religious folks to be automatically expected to pray or listen to prayer.

I suppose that you already knew this, but anyway, I hope you don't mind me mentioning it. (Sorry to seem a bit preachy myself, but I've been in such positions before and did not like it.)

Bullshit.

Mix it up. What's offensive Rudy? Not being more like you? Are you asking a moderator to censor his God fearing post?

I don't care what you say nor do I advise you to change. We would all be scratchin our butts if he hadn't posted. Instead we are having a deeply intellectual debate. Doh!

I for one, feel that prayer is the only thing that gets me through hard leads anymore.

I used to get into a Zen-like state where I would pull move after move and not remember any of it afterwards. Now I would pop a tendon getting my fat ass up that stuff.

But to answer the original question seriously, I think it is a contradiction to ask God for help getting through something I chose in order to challenge myself. There is that whole theological train of thought that says we should be letting go of our will and letting God guide our lives. I do not totally disregard that but I ask only for the guidance to find a range of acceptable choices. If we were not created to be individuals who can achieve a relationship with God then I don't get the point. Take responsibility for your own actions and weigh for yourself how they fit with a plan God might have.

And another thing... Before one of you lemming God bashers accuses me of being a creationist, I use the term loosely. The Bible is a snapshot of an anthology of mythologies at a particular point in their history of being interpreted by the editor dejouir. There is over 5000 years of human wisdom stored there in one form or another. It clearly isn't a roadmap for every action we might take but it has a few good points to make. Some of the best writers ever born contributed to it.

fuck off bug...he's the one that got his panties in a twist when some people made light of his post...fuck you again...

sheesh...and i never said i didn't have my own faith...i just don't need some bible thumping zealot to post on an OPEN forum and then get all hot and bothered and start preaching when some folks make light of it...deal with that... the_finger.gif

he finds it offensive when folks kid around...well, i find him and his preaching offensive (along with just about every motherfucker that tells me "how to find god" as if they know rolleyes.gif)

So...how's 'bout them apples?

and i believe the concept that you illustrated would be referred to, in my book, as "Don't call the Lord's name in vain"...

ie, you get your own dumb ass into a fix don't expect divine intervention to pull it out...you may get it and you may not...
