  1. One thing that I have done in the past when I been expected to guide people of questionable fitness level is that I take them out on a tuff hike close by with no exposure or risks. If they don't make it I haven't wasted my time and money on a failed climb.
  2. Mean people suck. I always thought that if I am on a trailhead that is of the beaten path my stuff would be safe. Guess this prove me way wrong. I am really thinking about getting an old junker that I would never lock and never leave anything in it.
  3. How high did you go? How was the conditions on the mountain?

  6. Buy your own pass. Make a copy of the permit and the recipte. Mail it to the court and they will most likly dismiss your ticket. Thats atleast what they did with my snow park permit crime.
  7. At dog mountain you need the forrest pass. I only know about one trail head in the gorge that doesn't accept the forrest pass as a valid permit.
  8. Medford is pretty close to Mt Mcloughlin and Mt Thielsen. Two more volcanos with rotten rock.
  9. Would be nice if Mike could do one down in Portland to.
  10. I been using a pair of Merrels High Cascade (leather) the whole winter and they never leaked.
  11. For multiday downpours I have not find anything that beats my 10$ poncho.

  13. I have been using a double size Coleman air mattress. Fits great in my Tundra.
  14. It was a couple off feet of snow at the most but I was driving on top of it so it was like any road. I think a potential problem might be when the temp gets warmer and the tires starting to break through the ice crust. All and all there was not a lot of snow anywhere. I have a Toyota pickup with mediocre tires and didn't really have any problems more then on one spot but I never got out of the car to do any digging. I did bring chains for worst-case scenario. The snowdrifts make the road bumpy but it is more like sand dunes, soft and flowy. It was actually worst right after Morrison creek and was getting better the closer to south spur I got. I was driving out around midnight on Friday-Saturday and it was starting to snow more and more. And it looks like it will keep on coming. http://www.weather.com/activities/other/other/weather/tenday.html?locid=98650
  15. Yeah that was my Tundra at the trail head. Thanks for making the tracks up to the trail head. I was close to get stuck going downhill, where the tree was blocking half the road. I was spending the night at pretty low alititude and Friday night the weather went sour so I hiked back to the trail head. How was your day on the mountain?
  16. I was upp there Friday and Saturday and was able to drive all the way to the south spur trail head. Although it was pretty deep tracks and bumpy so you will be better of with a high clerance vehical.
  17. The idea of a fed pass that lets you go anywhere sounds better and better. I would pay 150$/year for that. If for nothing else just to not have to deal with the hassel about keeping track of what I need to buy for my next trip. It really feals like there is alot of new passes lately. I wounder who approves all this. I would not think that they can just introduce passes at will.
  18. How fare up did you go? How many people do you think simmitted? How mamy people did you see on the mountain? Thanks for the info, I am thinking about getting up there next weekend and had hoped for skipping the snow shoes but it sounds like I should bring them.
  19. As long as we consume stuff there will be big business selling stuff. Unless we really want to give up our lifestyle we will continue to rape and pillage weaker countries. I drive 15k /year to climb lonely mountains and hike old growths forest. Does that make me into an environmental hypocrite? Hell yes. People can block logging and fight against corporations as much as they want but unless the average consumer is ready to accept some big changes it will not make a substantial difference. In most cases they would be better of spending their energy on consumer education instead. So in the main post we have this guy traveling around the globe consuming huge amount of fuel and there for he add to the same problem as everyone else. Thats not leading by example. I wounder what he personaly have done to save the enviorment more then complaining about what other people do
  20. So when do you think Cascade Lakes Highway (State 46) will open? Does anyone know a phone number that I can call and check when it will open? I have failed to figure out who actually manage the sister area. Thanks
  21. Sounds like there is a story that needs to be told.
  22. Climb: Mt Hood-Hogsback Date of Climb: 3/4/2005 Trip Report: Wasn’t really sure if I wanted to hike to the summit or not bout decided to go up and see what it looked like. I never hiked on Mt Hood before and some part of me thought it would be fun to have done it. Drove up Thursday evening and arrived at the parking lot at around 11:00 pm and was looking around and filled in the climbing report. Crawled in the back of the truck at around midnight and slept for a couple of hours. Cooked breakfast and hit the slopes at about 3AM. People are not kidding when they say the ski slopes are boring to hike. I missed my sleeping bag and wasn’t really all that excited. Was really thinking about turning around at Silcox hut but I kept trudging along. Saw a couple of lights ahead of me and the sunrise was also pretty cool. At around 9000 (?) I meet a group of 3 other climbers and I stayed behind them and enjoyed the landscape that was getting pretty cool once we left the ski area. We where taking our time stopping to look around. Conditions were fantastic except some ice in the pearly gate. The woman and I did the right side and the other two guys took the left side. Comparing notes I think we had equal conditions. When we got to the summit it was two climbers already there. They where waiting to head down the gates once we cleared out of the way. It was nice of them to wait for us. Took some photos on the summit and was heading down. Two of the guys skied from the summit and the third skied from the bottom of the hogs back where she had left her pack. Looked like they had great fun and I am sure it was a lot better then slogging down as I had to do. The snow was getting pretty annoying as I was getting down to the ski area. Once down at the parking lot everything looked like a Tivoli with cars and people everywhere. I will never do this hike on a weekend. So to sum it up it was my first hike up Hood and from what I can tell the conditions could not have been better. Nice snow all the way up and I meet a total of 5 people on the whole hike. Would like to thank the 3 climbers that let me tag along, made the day more fun for me and Strider.
