I think my post come out like I am bitter at SAR or something. Thats not the case I love doing it and I meet alot of fantastic people and I am helping out in the comunity while I am having fun. Bbut alot of people have this glorified idea about what it is and SAR will not make you score or make you into a hero in the press. Most likely you will be out 3 days in the rain just to find out that the person walked out 2 days ago and never told anyone. If you can get over that and learn to roll with the punches it is a wery rewarding thing to do.

I do SAR with my dog in Portland. It is alot of work and frustration but once in awhile it is fun. The political crap going on in a SAR group can be to much sometimes but if you find a good group it is a great experience.

So I have some questions about Mt Hood. Do they allow dogs on Hood or is it the same rules as on Mt Rainer? What times do the lift start? Or how do you get on a snow mobile? Is it better to just trudge up the hill and get it over with? Anywhere I can park my car if you want to sleep in the back for a couple of hours before I get going? Do I need to find a campground or does the parking lot work? Thanks

Drove from Portland to Mt Mcloughlin friday night, spent the night in the back of the truck. Saturday I did Mt Mclouglin. Got a ticket for only having a "Trail Park Permmit" not having a "Snow Park Permit" Drove back Saturday night. Sunday hiked in the gorge.

Well it is closed and all the roads around the mtn is also closed. And it is illegal to climb it. Your better of finding another mtn like Adams or hike to Camp Muir on Rainer. http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/recreation/mount-st-helens/index.shtml

Hard to say. It all depends on how much snow we will get the next couple of month. The snow depth is really low at the moment so unless something wet happens you should be fine. On a normal year I would say no.

Not sure about wind pants but I have a pair of wind panties that are really light. I saved lots of time on my forrest park hikes in them. You will not find them in outdoor stores though. A guy on one of my NOLSE classes told me that the best place to get them is at "Fantasy Clothing"

I talked to the ranger on Friday and she said that with a 4wd high clearance car you could make it to the camp just before south spur parking (the name eludes me at the moment)

So when I buy the annual climbing permit valid for Mt Adams and St Helens wouldn't you think it should be cheaper when I can only use half of it.

Fair amount of snow until about 6500 feet after that it was plenty of exposed rocks and ice. I turned around at 7500 due to white out conditions so above that I don't know what the snow conditions are. Total snow depth is about half of what it normaly is.

I'm going up to Muir Saturday. spending the night up there and we will see what I do on Sunday. Thanks for the heads up on bringing snow shoes, was thinking about leaving them at home but not anymore.

Great work guys. I would have a hard time to make it to the weekend if it wasn't for this place.

I usally don't care that much for low-fat desserts.

If you go up there I would like to know what the conditions are. I still haven't done my winter camping at lunch counter
-
Not sure about current conditions. a month ago you could still drive up to the trail head and it haven't been alot of snow sense then. Give the ranger a call, they are super nice and usally know what the road looks like. (509) 395-3400

Never made it out but I talked to the Ranger and she said that the snow level is low and that you can drive to the trail head with a 4wd. She also said that it is best to stay on the east side approaching pikers peak following Suksdorfs ridge to avoid av

In Portland you can take all your old poison (batteries , pain, fuel etc) to Metro and they will take it for free.

I been thinking about doing it myself if it wasn't for the money. Let me know what you think about it

Good winter insulated jacket -- recommendations?
barjor replied to crazybrit's topic in The Gear Critic
How does the Mt. Hardwear Chugach jacket compare in warmth with Patagonia DAS and Golite 6 month? Would it be warm enough for the cascade volcanos in the winter? Even if the temp ratings on sleeping bags are messed up it would be nice if there was something similar on jackets. -
Well it looks like the weather will be fairly ok this upcoming weekend and my tent are getting dusty. I was thinking about go out and spend the night at the lunch counter on the south route on Mt Adams. I have a hard time to decide if I should make a go for the summit or stop at the counter. I have hiked the summit in the summer but I am not sure what to expect from the slope up to Pikers peak in the winter. Is this slope prone to avalanches? Are there any other dangers on Adams that wasn't there in the summer, more then the obvious winter and cold hazards? How about crevasses on the summit cap, I would do this solo (with dogs)?

What does it take to get the solo climbing permit for Mt Rainer? How many peaks and formal training do you really need or is it more a liability issue?

As long as you don't use the chains on hard surface or a surface that will not let the wheels slip alittle bit the Tundra will do fine. If you like your diffs don't use 4wd on pavement while you are making sharp turns. The Tundra and Tacomas have a pretty good 4wd system but it is not as civilized as the subarus and volvos "all wheel drive" systems.

There is alot of army gear out there. Most of it is heavy and designed for extreme wear and tear and not all that great for climbing. Do you have any army gear you can recomend. I really like this sweater from the swedish army. M90 winter sweater (page is in swedish, but it have pretty pictures) I also been pretty happy with the US army modular sleeping bag system US Sleeping bag The new US army extreme weather base layer also looks pretty nice but spendy.

I just got 4 medium duty chains from Les schwab for my Tundra, paid 85$/pair. Easy to put on and to me thats worth alot. Not the beafiest chains I have seen but I usally just use them when I get stuck or ODOT makes me. Haven't used them yet so can't say anything about how they perform or how long they will last. And yes real chains is the way to go if you have space.
