  1. Yeah...the rickety hanging bridge...potbellied stove in Buck Harper's General Store...The Gendarme Climbing Shop and it's owner John Markwell. I think I climbed there between '79-'81.
  2. I, too, stood on the Gendarme in the 80's. Those of you who have shared this nefarious pleasure please weigh in if you've had Buck Harper shake your tent to alert you that he was there to collect the camping fee in the Pavillion Campground... It has, indeed, been that long.
  3. Why go to all that trouble? Just buy a jar of Nutella... 1 vanilla wafer 1 slice of kiwi fruit 1 dollop Nutella Eat. Repeat until sated...
  4. Cool. I look at it outside my back window every day.
  5. I don't know. I kind of like shamanism/animism myself. Shape-shifting anyone?

    Coffee

The best coffee is the one having the most fun.
  7. Oops, we elected a chimpanzee president. We're a deeply flawed species...
  8. I think you should sell mountaineering books, coffee, beer, and vintage musical instruments. And northwest coast indian art. I'd shop there.
  9. Tony Reece crashed one of his MD500 helicopters on January 4th while flying cedar blocks. He walked away from the crash but was hospitalized a couple days with lumbar fractures. He was working a logging job in the Lyman area of the Skagit Valley, bringing a line to a guy in an open area when the engine quit at about 140' he estimated. Time enough to move the helo away from the worker underneath him, then a straight down crash. A King 5 TV report with video may be viewed here. Those who know Tony or have been assisted by his rescue work may pm me for an address to send get-well wishes. A Northwest Mountaineering Journal profile of Rescue Pilot Tony Reece may be viewed here.
  10. Moderators: Please move this to the pirates thread.
  11. A sprayer whose name was Archenemy Found evidence of a visit from ten of me She wrinkled her nose Struck up a pose And said "Masterpark won't hear the end of me!"
  12. Escondidosmaster... Since you're a beginner in Virginia looking for a mountain to climb, may I suggest Old Rag. It is a pleasant climb with some interesting rock outcrops at the top with dramatic views. Try to avoid peak season summer weekends, however, as it can get very crowded.
  13. My friends Tony and Mark and I climbed Liberty Ridge as an overnighter from White River in the early eighties. At Thumb Rock bivy we met Tom Hornbein and his son Bob ...with whom I later became friends while attending the Evergreen State College. A fierce storm hit the mountain just as we topped out on Liberty Cap, and we clawed our way down the Edmonds Glacier. Epic overnighter!

  15. I agree with Matt P. Hidden Lakes Peak is pretty cool, indeed. That's where I want my ashes dumped.
  16. In 1968, the same year that North Cascades became a national park, the last grizzly bear in the park was shot. Where did this occur?
