  1. Guess I can't return my "Life is Good!" dog Frisbee and Lego Man Lantern any more I guess my response is "who cares"? I stopped shopping at REI a long time ago as a result of them not carrying a number of items I was in the market for. Ask any climber and I bet you get the same answer; REI's alpine climbing equipment and clothing selection is mediocre compared to local shops. Add to that a solid knowledge base on local conditions amongst local shop employees and I ask you "why are you still shopping there?"
  2. This year: Missoula ice climbers survive fall
  3. Brent McGregor of Sisters, OR is who you seek Or perhaps if Iain still posts here...
  4. I dont think it is up for an aurguement that it does or does not prevent tooth decay. The question is should the government force it on you? Yes they should. They should also force all you fatties to exercise. And wear a dog collar that shocks the piss out of you every time you try and cram some junk food down your pie hole.
  5. Good friend of mine who was in the Ruth the same time Daniel and I were just got out and sent me these two photos. Sunday morning Home in the Range
  6. Always great to meet other cc.comers! Hope you guys had a great trip! Cheers
  7. Wake is the second major summit directly south of Mt Dickey.
  8. Awesome; I'd love to see some more AK TRs. If you see Eric (he is likely coming out) tell him hi.
  9. Hands down the most comfortable helmet I've ever owned. Absolutely love it.
  10. Trip: Mt Wake (Ruth Gorge) - "The Cook Inlet" Date: 4/27/2013 Summary: Second Ascent of "The Cook Inlet" on Mount Wake on April 27 2012. John Frieh and Daniel Harro. Details: On April 26 around 11 am, Daniel Harro and I, John Frieh (both Portland, OR), flew from Talkeetna to the Ruth Glacier below Mt. Dickey in the Ruth Gorge. We set up camp and spent roughly four hours skiing around the gorge scoping possible lines. Though we didn't get a good look at it we decided to roll the dice on a line I saw last October when I made the first ascent of "The Cook Inlet" on Mt Wake. We left camp around 4 am on April 28 and started climbing up in between Wake and Johnson around 6 am. Unfortunately the line I had my hopes on was not in so after a discussion of our options we opted to repeat The Cook Inlet. I forget the exact times (perhaps Daniel recalls?) but I want to say it was a 20 hour day camp to camp. The route was in similar conditions to last October but as it had less snow on it so the mixed climbing and glacier travel was a little more involved and heads up. All in all a fine day out with my good friend Mr Harro. On the morning on the 28rd Paul Roderick of Talkeetna Air Taxi picked us up and brought us back to Talkeetna to make for a brief 48 or so hours in the range and 72 hours Portland to Portland. Long live the three day weekend! Though we have many more photos and video we are looking forward to using these to tell the story of our trips to Alaska this spring as part of the Copp Dash Inspire Award. Big thanks to Matt and David of the Alta Group, Jared and Clubsport, Colin B for the loaner skis, and all the great people at Mountain Gear! Racking up Fine mixed climbing low on The Cook Inlet Nice views higher on the route Near the summit Portland on top! Gear Notes: As ugly as some people contend it is the Petzl Sirocco is the most comfortable helmet I have ever owned. I love it. Approach Notes: Smash and Grab style climbing in the Alaska Range would not be possible without the expertise and service that Paul Roderick and Talkeetna Air Taxi provides. The best of the best. Fly TAT! The MAN: Paul Roderick
  11. That is totally wrong, maybe workout like that when you are 80. Interval training and weight lifting will jack up your heart rate, period. 95% of people I observe in the gyms are just time wasting wankers, who lack motivation. I just observed crossfit comp in Vegas last months. 120 wall balls (men 20 lbs, toss it above 12ft line after full squat), 90 double unders and 30 muscle-ups- 12 minutes! People don't get six pack because they work out and can talk! Cardio is ineffective in weight loss. 65% of MHR is actually ideal for optimization of the fat oxidation pathway. Jacking HR isnt a requirement for fat loss. Astrov needs to be more specific about his training goals (lose fat? or fat metabolism optimization?) before anyone can recommend a "best way"
  12. Call the Patagonia outlet stores. The one in Dillon, MT usually has the best selection Also some of the local resale shops will often have awesome finds but it requires you checking semi regularly.
  13. Depends on the year and how wet the summer was but yes late winter/early spring is usually better. If Valdez isn't in Nabesna is in for sure by November.

  15. Bibler Bombshelter is 4 season 4 person and very light for a true 4 person tent. Downside is you likely dont want to spend that kind of $$$ for a tent you likely wont use that much. I'd be willing to bet no one is going to want to sleep in the mid at 14 especially during a storm. What you'll likely do is throw all your extra kit in either the mid or the vestibule assuming the tent you select has a larger sized one and put everyone in the tent. So... if you go with a three person make sure it has a roomy vestibule. Another option is take two 2-person tents. A Bibler I tent and an Eldorado weigh about the same or slightly heavier than most 3 person 4 season tents on the market. Down side is slightly more set up/tear down time.
  16. Great boot. I thought they fit true to size (I wear a US 11 and the 45 fit me perfectly) but that's me.
