"we are all americans...why introduce the polarization?"

Unfortunately the poster hasn't the remotest prayer of understanding just how funny this statement is.

ok, so it is already introduced. why feed it?

Uh....because today is 666 upside down....and that is what we do.....feed the beast.

b/c its part of the political process and, to understand the criticisms a person makes of any action, it is instructive to consider their starting point - it is certainly meaningful, in a hypothetical case, if the only people complaining are self-described "liberals"

from the questions for this speech, i did encourage both a liberal/conservative criticism, as well as a general/practical criticism

in discussing the speech w/ my students today, most classes came up w/ this exact point - they also mostly agree: who cares?

I'm sure by "most" you mean the liberal students, and I'm sure everyone has picked up on where their teacher stands politics-wise.

The ones in your class who disagree with Obama are keeping their mouths shut. That's exactly the problem with introducing politics into the classroom and foisting one side's agenda on everyone.

fuck dude...read the questions he posted. then unbunch your panties.

"introducing politics into the classroom" what the hell, would you not have them teach political thought?

Right here:

C. Many conservative Americans think the President had an agenda or goal beyond that message – what evidence did you see of that and what could that agenda be? How fair is that criticism?

D. What other criticisms can be fairly made about this speech?

E. If we accept the conservative premise that this speech was pure propaganda we are still left with this fact which we can not hide from: Propaganda is everywhere! How should we prepare ourselves to live in a world of propaganda? What/ Where is the best way/place to learn to recognize and disarm it?

He's slanting the discussion, and students are not dumb. They know where Ivan stands on these answers.

you make a lot of assumptions, which is dumb in itself. from expereince, the majority of students who find me on graduation day (the day i promise them i'll stop playing devil's advocate) to actually nail down what i think express suprise - i thought you were republican!? as i said earlier in this thread, given that i teach a largely liberal crowd (young, kids of college educated, upper/middle class), i spend most of my time honestly trying to make conservative arguments

but you got it all figured out, so why waste the breath? i can honestly say though that i've had many kids of your stripe in my classes over the years and have enjoyed their presence and felt it very useful, educationally - strong minded folks, whatever their politics, make for a much more interesting discussion (and school policy is you can't tell anyone to lick sack either, so it's vaguely civil!) :)

out of curiosity, how do you figure any teacher of social studies can completly turn off their own personal politics? given that they went into that line of work, they probably care about the subjects being discussed - its a daily struggle to shove your own opinions down inside (and a good reason for the outlet of cc.com), and quite the mental excercise to give voice to ideas that aren't your own...

well i have more confidence in my son than you do. if he happened to get a conservajerk teacher who spoonfed him jackboot conservatard ideas, i'm sure he would toe the party line his father dictated to him like a good commie. :laf:

seriously though...in reality the apple usually doesn't fall from the tree. except on that excellent TV show "Family Ties".

fact is, you get what you get. conservatives are too busy off raping and pillaging the economy to take a low paying teacher jorb.

In general, I just think the rightwing is pissed that they got trounced in the last election and is willing to go ape-sh** on any issue, no matter how idiotic they look. Still playing the base and desperate to make sure Obama has no success. The party of no has no ideas left.

As far as brain-washing kids - they have a much more independent thought process than you give them credit.

poli sci is still going to be taught, though i suppose you could petition to have it removed from the curriculum. unfortunately you'd also have to get rid of "liberal studies" as well, as art, writing, and other such subjects are too politically charged to be taught in school either.

every teacher i have had tried their best to teach objective thinking...and I had both conservative and liberal teachers. certainly american schools have issues meeting "test score qoutas", but those aren't politically related.

I took Poli Sci in college, not high school, and it was an elective.

This thread is pretty much dead anyways. Now we've got another speech coming - on Health Care.

I imagine that this thread, on such an innocuous subject, will be tame in comparison to the coming health care thread. I don't even think socialism was mentioned here!
