Forty years and three days ago, our forefathers set forth to establish a new Woodstock nation.

There was a great fresh documentary/retrospective of the event shown tonight on the History Channel. What an outrageous line-up of talent. What a spectacular event.

I truly enjoyed the treatment shown tonight. I recommend it's viewing by anyone interested.

Hippies
It wasn't only hippies, mmeee-yaaaaaaaannn.

Bikers, babes from all those elite women-only-colleges lookin' to cut loose, aging beatniks dedicated to supporting Richie Havens, and geeky Buddy-Holly-glasses-wearin' college dudes in rayon slacks, white socks, and penny loafers.

I bet well over half of the 400,000 never smelled pot - much less smoked any - beforehand...

you fucking redneck fascist.

Sounds like a great party and all but really what did it do for us besides spawn fourty years of hippy jam band fests created for the sole purpose of selling t-shirts to burnout college kids. Yippee.

I'm holding out for the retro-retro-restrospective in which we're treated to footage of boomers whistfully commentating on a film composed of a panel of boomers whistfully commentating about their experiences at Woodstock while watching documentary footage of the actual event.

Perfect recursive loop of eternal self-absorption. That'd capture and dramatize the concrete cultural legacy of the event far better than any retrospective produced thus far.

Woodstock was the product of counter culture that was co-opted to become the mass culture of today. When was the last time commercial culture created anything new?

Jimi Hendrix - Live at Woodstock '69 - 56:39

Cancelled Acts

1. Jeff Beck Group (The band broke up in July, forcing cancellation)

2. Iron Butterfly (Stuck at the airport, their manager demanded helicopters and special arrangements just for them. Were wired back and told, as impolitely as Western Union would allow, "to get lost", but in other 'words'.)

3. Joni Mitchell (Joni's agent put her on "The Dick Cavett Show" instead)

4. Lighthouse (Feared that it would be a "bad scene".)

5. Ethan Brown (Arrested for LSD three days before the event.)

Declined Invitations

1. The Beatles (John Lennon said he couldn't get them together)

2. Led Zeppelin (Got a higher paying gig at the Asbury Park Convention Hall in New Jersey that weekend)

3. Bob Dylan (Turned it down because of his disgust of the hippies hanging around his house)

4. The Byrds (Turned it down because of a melee during their performance at the first Atlanta International Pop Festival, held at the Atlanta International Raceway on July 4 and July 5, 1969)

5. Tommy James & the Shondells (Turned it down because of being misinformed about the size and scope of the event)

6. Jethro Tull (Turned it down because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal.)

7. The Moody Blues were included in the original posters as performers, but backed out after taking a gig in Paris on the same weekend.

8. Spirit (they had other shows planned and did not want to back out of their commitments; not knowing how big that Woodstock would ultimately become)

9. Mind Garage (Declined because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal and had a higher paying gig elsewhere)

And as a result, younger generations have been forced to listen to nearly that exact playlist repeat itself over and over again on every classic rock radio station for the last fourty years.

Ah yes, hippies calmly stand by, some even snapping photos, while bikers use pool cues to beat the shit out of someone. That's my idea of peace and love. Should have used a Hippie Drill instead.

When's the Altamont reunion?

Check out the health care reform town hall meetings.

The Angels were neither this stupid nor were they packing this much heat.

According to reports there was violence throughout the event. While Hells Angels provided stage security, a number of them were out of control (driving through the crowd, beating up people rushing the stage, ..). I am not so sure it'd have been a good idea to interfere.
