MATT_B Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 No I don't want to kill a goat but I would like to see one. Maybe even some what close up. I'm looking for recomendations of places to go for a decent chance to see some mountain goats that is a reasonable day trip from Portland. I remember seeing some in the Mazama glacier area on Adams years ago. Any other suggestions? Hopefully this won't go to spray too quickly. Thanx in advance! Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Not the best day-trip option b/c of driving distance, but certainly do-able in a day... Ingalls Lake from the Esmerelda Basin TH. You're guaranteed to see goats near Ingalls Pass, and you can get within 5 feet of them if you give them a little treat... (this means start peeing after you've spotted one and it will come lick it up as you're still going - just do it on a rock so they don't dig up the vegetation). Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Goat Rocks Wilderness is full of the critters, and somewhat closer to Portland. If you want a really sure bet, hike to the base of Snow Creek Wall in Icicle Creek out of Leavenworth. You will see them at point blank range. Quote
lizard_brain Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 I'll second that Ingalls Pass statement. I was up there last weekend, and I took these at Ingalls Basin on the way out of there on Sunday... Most goats I've ever seen close up in one place. But like he said, not the closest drive to where you are... Quote
ericb Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Good odds at ingalls lake, but not a guarantee. Two summers ago, my wife and I camped near the lake and were surrounded by ~ 15 of the critters, including two kids that played king of the boulder 7' outside our tent for about 30 minutes in the middle of the night. I ran up the South Ridge of Ingalls last Tuesday, and didn't see a single goat the whole day. Quote
kevbone Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Ingalls Lake from the Esmerelda Basin TH. I concur, I have been in that basin 5 times and have never not seen more than two or three goats. Quote

I was there 2 weeks before to climb Stuart, and we saw 2 goats, a nanny and a kid, and that was it. 2 weeks later were there to climb Ingalls, and we were surrounded by them. I think those posers just saw my camera and had to cheeze it up. Quote
catbirdseat Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 I found a rifle shell casing below Goat Pass. Are permits issued for goat hunting? Just curious. Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 yeah, but they don't give out very many Quote
111 Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 there is an old goat who frequents the descent from Outer Space in Lwrth. He is pretty consistent and lets you get close. (especially if you pee on a rock nearby) Quote
cj001f Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 The enchantments. Take a piss on granite up by Sprite lake or the like and they'll come running towards you from 100s of yards away. Quote
Alpine_Tom Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 We did the W. ridge of Stuart 2 weeks ago, and saw what looked like that same herd of goats on the Ingalls trail, and then a couple of them high behind Long John Tower. Quote
dan_forester Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 also Mt. Elinor in the Olympics is a good place to see mountain goats. Quote
billcoe Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 There are @ 300 up at this lake (Twin Lakes) in the Elkhorns. @ 4 mile hike from the road just up out of Baker. Too long for a day trip, but gaurenfrikanteed goats. Lots of em. I was there like last month. Quote
mythosgrl Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Snow Creek wall in Leavenworth. We stashed our stuff up on a high stump so that the mountain goats couldn't get it. 3 pitches up Outer Space we looked down and they were all trying to get our pack. Never got it though. Humans: 1 Goats:0 Quote
bstach Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I always see a goat or two in WA Pass. You could always try the Zoo for a sure thing. Quote

There is now a sign in front of the Kain hut telling people not to piss on or near the front porch as the local wildlife will come and chew on it. So which one of you imbiciles was pissing on the porch up there? Quote
Otto Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 chucK and I had a goat visit us and our piss at the base of the West Face of NEWS last month. Then another, different one on the way back down. Quote
RichTurley Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 If you're in Utah, try back side of Timpanogas. I saw a clumsy goat there once. Rich Quote
MountaingirlBC Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I've always had loads of goats hanging around with me in the Enchantments. There was a very friendly one up at Liberty Bell last time I was up there too. Quote
kevino Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I got to play with a bunch in the enchantments yesterday. Quote
MATT_B Posted August 17, 2007 Author Posted August 17, 2007 Thanx all for the input. Looks like I'm going to have to make a bit of a road trip. Twist my arm. I've been wanting to get to most all those places anyway. Quote
billcoe Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Herd of Bighorn Sheep @ milepost 121 on hwy 26. Drive right past the Dalles on the freeway, park on the shoulder and look up. Quote
