Ropeup 2006 - Oct 13-15 Eight Mile Group Campsite

That dude on the left ain't no Eric. Maybe Eric the Half-a-Bee (due to an unfortunate accident). -
Some time ago, I read about a new design for an integrated starter/alternator which was so powerful that it could start the car intantaneously, such that the car could turn itself off automatically, and restart upon stepping on the accelerator. This design was not for a hybrid, but for a standard gasoline engine. Link I guess what's holding this back is the need for a higher voltage electrical system. The Japanese will probably be first to introduce such a system, since Detroit has waffled on this idea.

How big is that tree? Can it be cut out of the way?

I saw this Dihedral Wall route in an old Index guide book. It is listed as 5.9+, two stars. It is located to the left of Beak Beak Beak. It was mentioned briefly on this site by D. Cramer a couple years ago with no info. I got a report recently that it looked like it hadn't been climbed in years and has "trees growing out of it". Has anyone climbed this recently? Is it good, does it need cleaning. Any information at all would be welcome.

Welded or melted. Does it matter? No. Let's split hairs here, shall we? End result a knot that can't be untied. I don't know whether it is possible to get melting- maybe so. It is known that slippage can occur with clove hitches, so if melting could occur, it would happen with the clove.

I'll have my trigger repair kit with me. Bring your cams with broken wires, and I'll repair them if time allows. -

I wouldn't ordinarily recommend combining opiates and alcohol, but in your case I would make an exception. Good luck! -
You might find it ironic then that the Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Orhan Pamuk, was prosecuted for saying that the Armenian Genocide DID HAPPEN. Daily News Article

Experience w/ Metolius Offset Ultralights?
catbirdseat replied to TheOtter's topic in The Gear Critic
I'm pretty sure the middle lobe is the same size as the outer lobe. I think this must have been an arbitrary decision on Metolius' part. -
Damn, you sure sound familiar. You're from that place where it's more important to attack the person than to focus on expressing ideas in a compelling way. You are used to the stick. Try the carrot.

So his top anchor failed. How was it that his rope was still attached to the lower anchor?

Damn, that's the first I've heard of that. Guys like John Long recommend tying into their primary with a figure eight loop then clove hitch to any additional pieces. I guess there is a very good reason for this. i think it'd be pretty hard to untie an 8 if you went factor 2 onto it... That may be true, but it would be less likely to actually melt.

If there's a glaring fly in the ointment, this is it. Who gets 300K miles out of any vehicle? There's no inherent reason why a hybrid wouldn't last just as long as any other vehicle if the batteries were changed at appropriate intervals. A more credible study might factor in the extra energy required to do this rather than assuming a whopping 3:1 ratio in vehicle life. Use a 1:1 ratio, and the conclusions of the study come out quite differently. It all depends on whether it's a Toyota or a Chevy. But seriously, no one really knows what the longevity of hybrids is likely to be, even with battery swaps. These cars haven't been around long enough to have a track record.

I like this quote, ""It's not the financial plan I would choose, but it's a financial plan," prosecutor Dan Cable said."

You wouldn't be Dave Hahn, would you now?

You must be getting pretty desperate for partners. -
You thought it sucked because there weren't enough explosions or car chases.

This explains why people tell you you have to have a guide on the Matterhorn. There aren't any laws apparently, just "hoodlum guides", trying to protect their monopoly.

Has anyone seen Fume ( Dreams ). The dream of "The Blizzard" was pretty cool. The climbers were really old school.

Tell us more about Dr. Shigo. Got some links? Short Biography

Okay, I read the article and wondered about this statement. What are they talking about here? Carbon-fiber composites? Those would be difficult to dispose of. Right now, cars are mostly steel. They rip off the plastic panels and bumper components and then crush the whole thing down. It then gets shredded and goes off to China where it is melted down and recycled. If you start mixing metals like iron and aluminum, you'd have to separate the two before you could recycle. I would imagine that you could design the car so that ferrous components could be easily separated. Perhaps easier said than done.

They are starting to build hybrid SUVs. It would seem to me that if you put the extra money that the batteries and electric motor would cost into an aluminum chassis instead, you'd have a car that got better gas mileage, but wouldn't ever need a battery replacement.

That's easy. Newer cars are heavier with bigger engines. People like to be able to accelerate rapidly up to the next stop light.
