Some time ago, I read about a new design for an integrated starter/alternator which was so powerful that it could start the car intantaneously, such that the car could turn itself off automatically, and restart upon stepping on the accelerator. This design was not for a hybrid, but for a standard gasoline engine. Link I guess what's holding this back is the need for a higher voltage electrical system. The Japanese will probably be first to introduce such a system, since Detroit has waffled on this idea.

I saw this Dihedral Wall route in an old Index guide book. It is listed as 5.9+, two stars. It is located to the left of Beak Beak Beak. It was mentioned briefly on this site by D. Cramer a couple years ago with no info. I got a report recently that it looked like it hadn't been climbed in years and has "trees growing out of it". Has anyone climbed this recently? Is it good, does it need cleaning. Any information at all would be welcome.

Damn, that's the first I've heard of that. Guys like John Long recommend tying into their primary with a figure eight loop then clove hitch to any additional pieces. I guess there is a very good reason for this. i think it'd be pretty hard to untie an 8 if you went factor 2 onto it... That may be true, but it would be less likely to actually melt.

If there's a glaring fly in the ointment, this is it. Who gets 300K miles out of any vehicle? There's no inherent reason why a hybrid wouldn't last just as long as any other vehicle if the batteries were changed at appropriate intervals. A more credible study might factor in the extra energy required to do this rather than assuming a whopping 3:1 ratio in vehicle life. Use a 1:1 ratio, and the conclusions of the study come out quite differently. It all depends on whether it's a Toyota or a Chevy. But seriously, no one really knows what the longevity of hybrids is likely to be, even with battery swaps. These cars haven't been around long enough to have a track record.
