The sad f#$%ing truth

I'm sorry to have hurt your feelings but this is spray. I didn't spread my ill will outside of spray so it doesn't matter, right?

This is the point. Mean-spirited angry people are fostering the culture here that they want.

Don't wonder why many good climbers think this place is a joke. Don't wonder about the lack of content. This site does not live up to it's potential and this is the reason. That assholish behavior is relegated to a sub-forum does not change the fact that it part of the board, and part of the culture of the board.

This could be a good place to talk about non-climbing-related stuff with people who are climbers. Instead, anything that isn't climbing-related is categorized "spray". In "spray" you are allowed to be a dick. Some posters take great joy in it.

I think we'd be better off with a "bickering" corner where kevbone, KKK, raindawg and tvash could all go at it without bringing the rest of us down.

Where'd you come up with this gem of knowledge? Most good climbers are out climbing.... not sitting in front of a keyboard. A messageboard populated by good climbers would be mostly blank then die because there's nothing posted.

you sound like one of those telemarktips douchebags who really just wants to read a blog and fellate someone in the comments section

unfortunately the "good taste police" are rather expensive.

i don't think "being a dick in spray" is recent development...look back in the archives. sure the characters have changed, and as personalities come and go the site changes with that. but some how enforcing good tastes or civility sounds like a baby sitting. the moderators already have enough on their hands with the non-spray forums.

You think most good climbers climb SO MUCH that they never go on the internet? I bet most of the comments in here happen when posters are at work, slacking off. Your argument does not work.

You are absolutely right, Porter, that it is no recent development. It is also true that online (mostly) anonymous jerks are not unique to cc.com. And, I think you are right to suggest that "good taste" is a rather subjective concept and that at least to some extent we will never be able to runs this site so that it doesn't offend anybody or even so that it doesn't offend lots of somebody's.

Have we struck the appropriate balance? There are lots of different viewpoints on this question. But I don't think anybody can legitimately argue that there are not real trade offs being made. Quite apart from the question of whether certain behavior on this site discourages broader participation here, I think it is clear that much of what happens here is not only distasteful but it has real impact on how we see each other. Even bickering in spray affects how we conduct ourselves in the other forums and things that happen here affect how we behave at the crag or in the mountains.

Listen, fuckers.

Generally, the directive "don't be a dick when it's not necessary" is not very controversial. What do you gain by being angry and negative toward everyone?

Here the response is, "get a thicker skin!"

I don't advocate censorship and I think people should be able to act however they want here. I can take shit-talking just fine and I hate oversensitivity.

All the same, you get what you give. This website generally gets the dregs. Recognize that as a sprayer, you have an impact on this.

i'd have to disagree. you're confusing spray with the rest of the site. some people come here for spray, thats for sure.

but you don't have to read spray, and most of our users don't. they come here for information about climbing. hence the name of the website: cascadeclimbers.com

sure you can claim that spray bleeds over into the other forums, which is true to some extent...but as far as the over the top negativity, its not supposed to be happening in the other forums.

I don't know what all the fucking whining is about. "whaa whaaa, cc.com culture is so shitty..." Boo fucking hoo. If you're looking for culture on a fucking climbing website than you need to stop jerking off so much to porn and start making real friends. Go out and have some crazy sex, or something. There are some great restaurants in town. Want a recommendation?

I think there's nothing wrong with cc. It's like one giant disfunctional family. I come from a disfunctional family, maybe that's why I like it. I've met tons of great partners here, and got lots of great beta and free medical advice, plus I get a lot of laughs. This place has made me a better climber.

Sure, spray is crude and infantile. I hope it never changes.

BTW, I hate you all.

as a moderator of spray, i'd like to add, fuck all y'all. alright? chill out people. spray is not a big warm fuzzy group hug. hell porter gave y'all the cafe for that shit. go be nice to each other there. this site is the mix of people who post here. go post on RC or Supertaco if you want something different. start your own group hug site. we do our best to keep the crap limited to spray. if the bad ass climbers of the world are offended by the spray, then they need to have another look at the rest of the site and stay out of spray.

What, you want names? A list? It's pretty big. I've met lots of people from here.

For instance, my partner on both of my most recent TRs was from this site. The guy who took my on my first trad climb ever was from here. The guy who took my on my first alpine climb was from this site. I did my first trad lead with a guy I met on here. The guy who took me out and taught me to ice climb was from this site. My first 5.9 lead was done with a guy I met on this site.

I've met lots of partners and mentors on this site. Most of them I still climb with regularly. Many are now close friends.

Lick it!
