ryland_moore Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 Anyone know the guys from P-Town who climbed this last week? I'd love to see the pics. Heard they were floating around the internet somewhere. Maybe already been posted on this site. Thanks. Quote
cj001f Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 Very cool! I was wondering if someone would. I'd be careful about posting a copy of the pics here. I believe climbing the falls is technically illegal. Grrr..... Quote
JayB Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 I think the odds of anyone being caught and prosecuted are extremely low so long as the pics are selected carefully and no one identifies the climbers/the climbers don't identify themselves. Post 'em if you've got 'em I say... Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 Werd. If cops cruised this board looking for law breakers we'd all be in jail. Quote
boatskiclimbsail Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 We got hassled by two different Sherrifs last weekend for the way our cars were parked (well off the road mind you). Don't want to know what would happen if they were waiting at the bottom of a thin 3 pitch drip. Quote
cluck Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 give 'em up. We all need to see pics of that beauty. Quote
Alpinfox Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 Are you guys serious? Did M.F. actually freeze!?!? I would not have guessed that was possible. If so, and it was CLIMBED! Holy shit! Nice work! Is that an FA? Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 I don't think it froze enough to climb the entire falls this time either. However, I know its been climbed before. Quote
ryland_moore Posted January 16, 2004 Author Posted January 16, 2004 I tracked down a firend of one of the guys who climbed it and the friend saw the photos. He sent him an e-mail and hopefully will get back to us soon. If I get the guy's permission to post, I will. If not, maybe I can just print them out and bring them to the next pub club in Portland. luvshaker Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 I never heard if they indeed topped out.? Or anyone else in history? Quote
iain Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 well it did freeze. my "negative" response was to the question of it being a first ascent, and it is not. but here's a picture: Quote
JayB Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 Is that water or a pillar coming out of the middle of the upper flow? Quote
ryland_moore Posted January 16, 2004 Author Posted January 16, 2004 Any idea when that pic was taken? Ie. after the Hwy opened up or during the peak of the cold temps? Quote
iain Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 pillar at the top, water at the bottom ryland: I'm not quite sure, I'll check w/ the guy. Quote
Sabertooth Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 Nice picture Cluck. That pillar looks insane. I wonder how it rates. 5+ or more due to the fact if it collapses you could easily die. Quote
Alex Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 it looks 5+ or 6 (hard to tell at a distance). though i know its been climbed before, I've never seen a pic of it. good on ya! Quote
southernmtguide Posted January 19, 2004 Posted January 19, 2004 I used to live in Portland, and I think in 92 or 93 we had an awesome winter where lots of climbs got done in the Gorge. There was a report of one party climbing it that winter. We did a four pitch flow just to the right of the main waterfall, hidden in the picture on this thread. I will see if I can find some old photos of it. Crazy route, just kind of ended in a long patch of frozen moss, dirt, and shitty basalt/rubble. Got to be lowered off to the top of the last pitch with a russian version of a spectre pound in. Quote
klenke Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 There's something about that pillar. It looks too straight on the left side and if you look close there are parallel razor-thin lines to the left. I'm not saying it is fake, just that it looks fake. Quote
ryland_moore Posted January 20, 2004 Author Posted January 20, 2004 To make a long story short, someone pm me with their e-mail who'd be willing to upload this photo I received from a friend of the dude that climbed in the area, so it can be attached or uploaded to a URL. I do not have any photo enhancing software and therefore cannot make the image smaller (it is huge). I cannot figure out where on the falls this photo was taken. There are trees above the climber, but I cannot tell where they are. To the right of the main falls? Maybe Iain's pic was taken after or before the right side formed? Your thoughts? Quote
goatboy Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 I assume that those "parallel razor thin lines" are actualy just running water . . . could that explain it? Quote
rr666 Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 That rocks. I bet that was a sight to watch!! Quote
