Yos Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 The man who introduced us to El Cap passed away last night. Quote
Yungaburra Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 You sure about this? If so I am sadened by this. Just yesterday I was reading an interview with him and once again amazed by what he did back then. Climbing what was thought impossable, what a loss to the climbing world. Quote
offwidthclimber Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 just read the sad news in two different spots. the man, the legend, the king of el cap is gone. here's to batso and his inspiration cheers. Quote
bonehead Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 It's a sad day.... I've always considered Warren Harding the Keith Richards of climbing.... Hard man, no bullshit, and always told it like it is.... r.i.p. Quote
hasbeen Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 And his "Downward Bound" is probably the funniest climbing book ever written. Hoist one (or several) for Batso! Quote
roger_johnson Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 Really should break open a bottle of cheap red wine. Batso got the big wall installed in the American climbers conscious. He made that big scary first lead into the void; we are just following him. Climbers everywhere lost something with his loss. Quote
Dru Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 along with drinking some red wine we should all go drill a bathook hole! who in this day of "Extreme Carbon Fiber Met5 curved shaft toothbrushes" would have the gumption to admit that their latest, greatest technology is, basically, absurd? he's gone his legacy lives on Quote
mattp Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 To properly mourn, you'd have to take your wine and go hang out on a wall for, like, 30 days. Warren was the real thing! Quote
rr666 Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 Cheers to the pioneer. It is a sad day for the climbing community. Quote
jennie Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 His contributions to climbing were outstanding. He was definatly one of the great legends. Is there an article on-line about what happened? Quote
erik Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 one of my few heros is anow fallen.......time for the binge long live the crazies and their hallucinations!!! Quote
glacier_dup1 Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 I read from other sources that it was liver failure- I believe he had been fighting liver disease for a while. And they say red wine is supposed to be good for you. I guess not in industrial quantities. Anyway, I had a glass of cheap red for him last night. Quote

pope Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 Was the DOLT Cart part of the basically absurd technology? Did Warren invent that crazy thing? We really should have a wine party on the Big Honker in honor of our role model. Quote
ScottP Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 quote: Originally posted by pope: Was the DOLT Cart part of the basically absurd technology? Did Warren invent that crazy thing? (Snip). The DOLT cart was invented by Bill "Dolt" Feuhrer. One of the original team to attempt the Nose. He hung himself a few years later. Quote

MATT_B Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 Too bad Harding didn't put up any routes around here (or did he?). We could go all go repeat one of his routes in his honor. Maybe a trip to the valley is in order. . . I will have to settle with a bottle of red wine, Christian Borthers was the wine of choice on the new dawn wall if I remember correctly. Quote
Dwayner Posted March 2, 2002 Posted March 2, 2002 And here's a sixer of Mickey's for Batso! NEXT PUB-CLUB WILL BE IN HONOR OF THIS GREAT MAN, BIG-WALL ROLE MODEL AND INSPIRATION FOR US ALL! Drink up! And here's another one! - Dwayner Quote
dlando Posted March 2, 2002 Posted March 2, 2002 My favorite Harding quote: "Today's climbers are whole new breed...They're strong...fit...responsible. They're like Olypian atheletes! They've really gone astray..." Quote
Guest Posted March 9, 2002 Posted March 9, 2002 Batso you were the best YOU went to the Big Wall in the sky with glory! Hardcore! Quote
W Posted March 9, 2002 Posted March 9, 2002 Another great Harding quote: Media Reporter on top of El Cap after the WEML Climb: "Why do you climb?" Harding: "Because we're insane". Quote
pope Posted March 25, 2002 Posted March 25, 2002 "I never trained. To me, training was going up on a wall without a hangover." NPR interview (1997?) Quote
