I mostly agree with what you're saying however sometimes countries/corporations can move backwards or remain static. In the book Guns, Germs, and Steel the author gives the example of China, I forget the date, but they had a very advanced navy/merchant fleet, but after a bunch of ships sunk in a typhoon the government discouraged improvements in sea travel and many other technologies. China lost its big lead in technology over Europe and eventually Europeans viewed them as backwards. I personally believe that the government needs to put money into alternative energy projects in much the same way as they did during the space race. The space race led to all the fancy pants computers we have today.

I think europe would be a better model in some respects. Gas isn't that much more in Canada right now, but it's cost a lot more in Europe for a long time. The downside is that Europe has a much better rail system; so you don't need the car in the first place.

LSD induced psychosis only affects the user. Anyway I don't agree with Dave's view that LSD is, "the best drug." All you have to do is look at folks like the original lead guitarist of Pink Floyd, Sid Barrett, to see that it can push one into a lifetime of mental problems; however there's no proof that he wouldn't have ended up that way eventually. On the other hand there are a lot of people out there that have done the stuff a handfull of times and aren't confined to a psych ward; they even have jobs and pay taxes and shit. I'm sure you're too straight laced and uptight to even think about that.
