  1. Dr. David Long at St. Vincent's here has done some good work I can vouch for. Might've retired though, it's been 7 years.
  2. i think the obvious one above shadow line is Katanai (sp?) Rock. if so, dome would be beyond & probably obscured by haze. Katanai from west:
  3. pm sent
  4. Very cool stuff. some of the rock looks like east wall of smith group. how tall some of these spires, eg http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/plab/data/500/medium/1112.JPG ?
  5. J., it was nice climbing Steger along with you gents. Got a couple of photos of you guys - will email you once I get back to work tomorrow. Cheers.
  6. Paul, congrats man!! What's next?
  7. there was a nice TR here couple years back on someone doing just that solo.
  8. Great TR!! I thought we got the exit strategy wrong when we did that (spectacular) rap off the summit ridge?
  9. Great stuff! Esp: "This peak was climbed in 1958, 1977, and 1983 according to the register. " Got any photos?
  10. Hi Bill, would love to give it a shot sometime this winter. If you don't nail it before, would be great to join forces (though I did promise my wife that st. petes was my choss retirement party )
  11. We hiked down last winter just to have a looksee at it. Tim Olson has some nice info. on the route(s) on it in his new Gorge climbs book. Looks like a fun outing - makes me think of Lost Arrow spire...just a little smaller and probably not as solid
  12. Beautiful pic's & great TR! Always wondered about that formation while hiking by on the trail.
  13. Donald Baars passed away at the age of 80 in Lawrence, KS on July 7th, 2008. Don was best known to the climbing community for his second ascent of St. Peters Dome in 1947 (by a new route) and the first ascent of Steins Pillar in 1950 both amazing accomplishments for their time. Don posted here on occasion as Don79. I never met Don in person but have exchanged countless emails with him in the last 1-2 years. He was actively researching the climbing history in Oregon. Most recently, he co-authored an article (along with Jeff Thomas) on the climbing history of St. Peters Dome published in the 2007 Mazama Annual. He was always very encouraging of and interested in “adventure” type climbs around the PNW.
  14. Great climb & a what a TR too Paul! Looks like the opening decade of the 21st century might well be the Golden Age of Lincoln. "After Fred Beckey’s first ascent in July 1956, the climbing history of Lincoln is a bit vague. We would love to hear from you if you made an ascent.. We knew of three previous ascent parties after Beckey’s: John Roper, Silas Wild, Dick Kegel, and Reed Tindall on June 25, 1989 Don Goodman and Juan Lira on June 8, 2003 Dave Creeden, Stefan Feller, Mike Torok, and Greg Koenig on June 25, 2006"
  15. Nice TR. That slab to dihedral with a wide crack was fun (& easier than it looked) but ended up being pointless as it did not buy much progress toward the summit. Curious too where the route actually went.

    Mystery Trail

Mystery Trail TR & thanks for your good word.
  17. That looks like a great pitch. Nice TR & great photos!
  18. Wayne, I'd be happy to mail you a copy of that FA article if you have not read it yet - it's a good one (as is Don's FA of Steins article by the way).
  19. I Almost Died (11a) at Smith - kind of like Culls in Space but with a thinner crack (more "slanting" than overhanging I guess). Much Ado About Nothing (10d) at Smith has a short overhanging crack at top.
  20. Great photos - thanks for posting! What MCash said: really inspires me to go back there as well.
  21. many thanks to you guys for this one - it's a great route!
  22. John - many thanks for good word Sir (& for letting me photocopy FA article back in like '04?). The dream turned into a nightmare about 20' up this thing
