Called for and got a hip belay yesterday! I can't think of more than half dozen times in 20 years of rock climbing where a cordelette would have made my anchor safer. Maybe its just my age but I like things simple.

[TR] Red Rocks sort of - can you guess 6/4/2007
Drederek replied to shapp's topic in The rest of the US and International.
Valley of Fire, Did a walk thru with the folks there once. Heard there were some long routes some where out there but saw no evidence of climbing activity. -
Thx for sharing the info A-boy, but where is Indian beach? I spend some time every year in Lincoln City and am wondering if its nearby. We also camp at Cape Lookout (Tillamook) and Harris Beach (Brookings) Most of the northerly stuff I've looked at is a bit on the loose side but down south it seems there is more that is in better shape. It'd be nice to sneak away from the family vacation for an afternoon of bouldering.

I made it no further than the minor peak. Was heading up to Stone and lost the trail in the snow above the rock bench. Contoured toward the waterfall for a few hundred yards till I saw a narrow snow filled gully going straight up. So I bit and believe it led me up to St Peters gate. Once I gained the ridge I headed up it toward Stone. I had been quite impressed with the rock quality below this peak while hiking under it to Stone last fall so I was curious if it might have some solid cracks to climb on it and was happy to "settle" for it. Alas the top was typical of the area with just a few clumps of much harder rock mixed in. I ate lunch and put a sweater on which I almost immediately took off due to a slight thinning of the clouds and rapid increase in radiant heat. On the way back down saw some tracks coming up from route 2 so decided to prolong the adventure by descending that direction and get to that nice flat road more quickly. There's a lot more snow on that side of the ridge which made the going fairly easy. Lost the tracks fairly quickly and probably went down more directly than the "faint trail" but managed to make it down, the last 500' through the brush, picking up the "faint trail" for the last 50'to the old bridge.

Well you guys weren't quite alone, I got this shot from the minor peak just a few hundred yards east of Stone. Actually saw a couple peeps (musta been you) as I was hiking up the last bit of ridge. What a great day!

I'd like to be able to upload my pictures. They are too big and I'm not clever enough to resize them. Can't you give us some sort of standard auto resize option? Something like what hotmail does? I'm sure many peeps got it all figured out but I'm not one of them.

There's a very wide ("12" or so) left of the special spot

Hey Off, how did the cliff fare thru this latest bit of unpleasantness? I'm hoping it got by with minimal precip and will be fine wednesday. And a big WTG to Dom for sending Legends! Whats it been 20 years since its last redpoint?

But the daily "0" just ran a story on how cool pirate stuff is!

Question for stairmaster users / owners
Drederek replied to kweb's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
Its been awhile since my gym retired their stairmasters but what I recall is when you are high up on them it is more like bicycling and when you're lowdown its like running thru surf. I would go up or down for a change of pace/rest from an intermediate height, which was somewhat like ... walking up stairs! (sorry, couldn't resist) -
look up about 4 posts

We'll set you up with a real slack backup TR and let you take some 20 footers to check them out

Echinacea has been most effective for me before the cold/flu gets going strong. I try to use it within 8 hrs of the first symptoms.

You mean when Spock went into heat?

Not much snow left below 4k in the SE Olympics on monday. Where is this road?

Taking my wife on a 'hike' across Bellygood Ledge for lunch on the Dance Platform really helped her. Good Luck

WTG Off. I looked down that route about 10 mo's ago and I'd definitely like it 'nicely filled in'. I'm up for day peaks over there if you ever want company.

Get up earlier, lazyass

You can make it with a 60 but just barely!

Good technique and the correct amount (or more) of strength will make tape unnecessary. If you are strong enough to lock off your jam and not wiggle or twist you won't get scraped up. By allowing you to shift your jam without completely releasing it tape definitely helps. So tape, like sticky rubber and beta are aid.

I would heartily second Peekaboo Tower and the Duty dome as well. Keen Acres is a great place to get warmed up. Don't hike up to CA till you've done the 3 excellent routes up the middle of bathtub dome. The crags closer to the roads can get crowded (like clamshell or alphabet) but are worth checking out. Clems holler, retardant rock and the special spot all have some gems.

How many climbers does it take to change a light bulb?

I would guess about a half an hour or less. A little more than a mile with 300' of elevation gain max. Off White posted a TR last year of a fun snow chute on Washington.
