minx Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 why is it better for me than white flour/bread/crackers ect? Quote
rob Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Whole grains are less processed and have more of the good stuff in them. Refined grains have had most of their good stuff removed by milling and contain far fewer nutrients and fiber. Also, processed grains tend to have a higher GI, though whole wheat is still pretty high GI. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/whole-grains/NU00204 Quote
AlpineK Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Would you rather have a whole or half dollar? Hmmm Quote
bstach Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Whole grain bread, pasta, crackers etc. really aren't that much better than their white equivalents (as they are still very processed) despite what Food Inc would have you believe (the first ingredient in whole grain Fruit Loops is still sugar). If you really want the benefits of whole grains, eat more unprocessed whole grains: *oat groats (takes longer to cook, so i cook these up the night before and nuke 'em in the morning *steel cut oats - similar nutritional value as oat groats, but cook faster *Brown rice *Buckwheat ...you get the idea. I throw in some blueberries or raisins and Flax seed oil (omega 3 source) with my oats - breakfast of champions. Add brown sugar or organic maple syrup (grade b) if you must - its still way better than whole grain fruit loops Quote
keenwesh Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 if you like oatmeal try and get some proatina, it's gluten free along with over 20% omega-3 content. I'm pretty sure it's only available here in MT but I'm sure it could be found online. Camalina oil can also be used in home made bread, although some people (myself included) don't really like the taste, which is similar to broccoli. Wheat really isn't that nutritious, for eons it has been selected for pest and disease resistance, not nutrition. The mice and bugs that eat wheat can tell what is good and they go after the most nutritious plants, therefore as time has gone on wheat has gotten worse and worse. I got to play around this semester crossing high lysine wheat varieties and I for sure will not become a plant breeder, plucking out the stamens and bagging each wheat sheaf was far to tedious for my add self. Coldfinger Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I like how whole wheat products look, white bread is so boring and makes folks feel poor. Now if we could just get America too eat more pumpernickel........ Quote
DPS Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Ray Jardine described white wheat flour as having so many nutrients removed so that not even bacteria could grow on it which is what makes it shelf stable. Quote
Coldfinger Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 But as a peanut butter sandwich it tastes so good I can forget I am too broke for the jelly Quote
ZimZam Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 White bread will give you the ba-squishies and a muffin top. Quote
akhalteke Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Whole grains make you poop better. You had me at poop better. Quote

KaskadskyjKozak Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 whole wheat tastes bad so you eat less of it. Quote
G-spotter Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 White flour is like corn-fed beef. Bad for you and tasteless. Whole wheat flour is like grass-fed beef. Quote

Not entirely accurate -- lots of whole grain breads and pastas are quite a lot better for you than their "wonder bread" alternatives. For example, there are lots of whole grain sprouted breads and organic whole wheat pastas that register significantly lower on the GI scale and contain significantly higher levels of fiber and nutrients, etc. You have an excellent point though that you have to pay attention, as noted in your "whole grain fruit loops" example -- there are lots of "whole grain" junk food products. But there ARE still lots of whole grain bread and pasta products that are much better for you. For example, the "Ezekiel" products that Food for Life puts out are excellent, even for someone like me who is prone to insulin resistance. Quote
ivan Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 whole soylent green or white soylent green, that is the question. Quote
