RuMR Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 would you rather spend a month next summer in a. New River Gorge b. Bishop c. Squamish Quote
RuMR Posted October 30, 2009 Author Posted October 30, 2009 i'm leaning towards (a)...time to go home for a long visit and take my little ropeguns with me... Quote
G-spotter Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Summer in Bishop? heat prostration... Quote
eldiente Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Um, melting hot boulder problems, stupid hot sport climbs. Or rad, perfect temperature granite cracks? That's an easy choice. Quote
Pete_H Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 I was in Red River Gorge in August a while ago and it wasn't that bad. Howz about Toulumne though? Quote
matt_warfield Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Squamish if the weather is good. Consider d: Boulder and Estes Park CO. A lifetime of climbing. Never been to the Red so I can't comment. Bishop is lots of fun but in the gorge the climbing is a bit derivative (vertical face climbing) and bouldering at the Buttermilks will be boring for the wee ones. Quote
curtveld Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Or rad, perfect temperature granite cracks? That's an easy choice. Yeah it's Bishop with a back-country guidebook. Quote

That's an easy choice. there's deepwater soloing at the new, and morning and evenings are fine with me... squamish is definitely in the running...but the NRG would be very cheap... Quote

ivan Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Summer in Bishop? heat prostration... ditto for anywhere in the american south during the summer! why on earth would you inflict that on a poor child? Quote
billcoe Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Who wants to get in the office pool for how long it takes to turn this into another Beacon Rock thread? Quote
RuMR Posted October 30, 2009 Author Posted October 30, 2009 beacon climbing ==> does not equal quality climbing... maybe entertaining, but hardly a destination... next... Quote
RuMR Posted October 30, 2009 Author Posted October 30, 2009 why not let your rockstar son decide? if i did, he'd pick european limestone...all he does when he's not actually climbing or at the gym is salivate over youtube videos of the latest limestone mega-proj going down to some hip hop shit music... JosephH Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 I'm with Mark - summer in Eldo and RMNP every time. The SE is all about climbing in the fall. They don't call the southern 23 counties of Illinois "Little Egypt" for nothing, let alone TN and points SE of there. If you're going East anyway then go NE and hit the Gunks, Cathedral, and Cannon. Quote
RuMR Posted October 30, 2009 Author Posted October 30, 2009 part of me wants to take my boys back to where i learned to climb though and i can't very well take them out of school in the fall or spring...and with summersville lake, shoot, summer's fine at the gorge... Quote
JosephH Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Well, for me rock-wise, SE sandstone will always be #1 leagues ahead of other sandstones, basalt, and especially granite, so I'm with you in spirit. Quote
RuMR Posted October 30, 2009 Author Posted October 30, 2009 well said...it is the absolute best cragging in the us, hands down... although granite with splitters is a ton of fun too... Quote
JosephH Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Can't go with you there - I find granite, and especially splitters of any stripe, tedious and boring from a movement perspective. Quote
RuMR Posted October 30, 2009 Author Posted October 30, 2009 uhhhmmmm offwidths are not boring!... Quote
ivan Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 beacon climbing ==> does not equal quality climbing... maybe entertaining, but hardly a destination... next... especially since you can't climb there the first month of the summer without making the birds Quote
