MarkMcJizzy Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 How about these protection bolts at Marble Canyon. There are seven of these protecting a 5.4c. All have hardware store "biners" afixed, so those don't even have to be brought to the crag. I don't have a particular problem with a well bolted beginner route, but the large fixed chains in leu of QD's, and the dangerous use of non-carabiners is pathetic. Quote
ashw_justin Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Maybe this is what happens when people start thinking that permanently-hung quickdraws are ok. It must make perfect sense to a gym rat. Quote
Jens Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I'm not a fan of the fixed chain QD's on steep routes because they seem to add a ton of rope drag and make the rope feel heavier. Rifle has a bunch of them. ---------------------- It is pretty scary how weak some of that hardware store stuff is. Quote
letsroll Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Not only is that bad practice, it looks like crap. What people are too lazy to clip thier own draws? What next, leave the rope up for out door TR'ing? Beginners have to learn to clip bolts and think about rope drag at some point. Better on an easy route than on when they are pushing thier personal grade. Quote
MarkMcJizzy Posted August 16, 2007 Author Posted August 16, 2007 Not only is that bad practice, it looks like crap. My main concern is that they look like total shit. I didn't have a cresent, or I would have removed them. Quote
kevbone Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I wish I could climb the route first.....then say good bye to them. How wierd. Quote
G-spotter Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 it's a via ferrata thing for the guide trainees at TRU Quote
catbirdseat Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Since when did 5.4 get letter grades? What rock have you been hiding under? It's standard practice up there. Quote
dan_forester Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 What next, leave the rope up for out door TR'ing? a steel cable on a pully would probably handle the weather better Quote
EWolfe Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 That's a total sandbag - it's at LEAST 5.5a That stainless stuff is expensive, the has-been nuveau-riche must be at work again.... Quote
ashw_justin Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 It was 5.4d, but then tape fell off one of the crux holds, but my buddy didn't know it and he onsighted it anyway, so I think we are ready for indorphamine bliss, I heard alpine climbs are soft Quote
EWolfe Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 LOL The Gorilla tape works excellently for those tough route-defining tags. I was obviously off-route. What a sketchfest, TR when I recover. Quote
AlpineK Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Clearly the next picture posted here should be Don's favorite Via Ferrata picture. I mean why do a wimpy Via Ferrata like the photo above when you can go full on. My best approximation: Actually after the Tacoma Narrows that thing looks pretty fun. Quote
Raindawg Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Clearly the next picture posted here should be Don's favorite Via Ferrata picture. Actually after the Tacoma Narrows that thing looks pretty fun. Nice try with the cool looking bridge. (if the bridge breaks, won't they all go sliding off the end?) Anyway, I have yet to see a via ferrata photo that exudes the same power and emotion of the favorite below. There's a little village below and the guy just crawled out of his bedroom window late in the morning, walked a block to the rungs, and set out to meet his buddies on the summit where they'll pass around a girlie magazine and swig down a couple of tall ones. This exuberant fellow seems to be saying: "Hey you! That's right, you! This is where the big fun is and I'm having some!" Quote
Mark_Husbands Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 i think them ferratas look fun. sort of a cross between going climbing and going for a jog. Quote
Slesse Climber Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 i think them ferratas look fun. sort of a cross between going climbing and going for a jog. Somewhere between a gondola and free climbing. We need one of those on The Chief...not. Quote
jon Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Don's favorite Via Ferrata picture. DID SOMEONE SAY VIA FERRETA? Quote
Chad_A Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Wow. I usually stay out of the bolt war discussions, but that's fucking terrible. Quote
Alex Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Agreed, looks like crap. I sure could use that hardware for some other stuff, so....where.. exactly is this rig? Quote
Raindawg Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Agreed, looks like crap. I sure could use that hardware for some other stuff, so....where.. exactly is this rig? Ya, man. It kinda of looks like "Rap Wall" up at Snoqualmie. Quote

Using at my new proj out near Black Diamond, sinking steel faster than paper boats in my bathtub! Quote
