Blake
bit of a random question I know... but what kind of underwear do the guy out there like to wear for days of long hikes or long climbs. general summertime alpine adventures? I get annoyed with normal cotton boxers and I'm looking for suggestions.
Chad_A
Hey, Blake, Â I don't know how unique it is, but a few years back, I picked up a pair of Gramicci swim trunks. They're nylon/quickdry (obviously), comfortable to hike in (double use as underwear and shorts), have a cinch waist, and don't seem to bunch up too badly if I have a heavier pair of, say, Scholler pants over top of them for a colder summit day. They let the boys breathe nicely
crackers
My fiance bought me three pairs of patagucci capilene boxer briefs. I had to admit it, but i love them and i'm planning to get some more during their next sale...
catbirdseat
Nylon is fine and it dries quickly but it is clammy and clingy. I prefer polyester. Oops! Not THAT polyester. This: Edited July 21, 2006 by catbirdseat
TrogdortheBurninator
I also have three pairs of thje Gucci capilenes (silk weight). They are the shit. Seriously, they are super comfortable and the dry fast. Plus they have these cool flat seams that don't chafe.
mattp
I have never had any problem with cotton.
ketch
I usually don't have any trouble with cotton. That said I was given a pair of capilene made by Mountain hardware that has silver entrained in the fibres. It really works good to reduce the mank factor. I usually wear them on multiday trips. slothrop
Cotton kills. You are all sketchy. There are countless cases of testicular hypothermia documented in ANAM, isn't that enough to convince you? Â Every piece of synthetic fiber that comes into contact with my ass retains a whiff of that lovely aroma forever. Heat and exertion only cause the dormant stank to reassert itself with greater fury each time. Perhaps silver-lined shorts, as ketch suggests, are the cure, but I'm sure they're not cheap. Â Cotton and wool, on the other hand, come out of the wash fresh as a daisy and stay mellow for a while. I've never had a problem with comfort with natural fabric undies, any season of the year. Except that one time I skied down St. Helens in my underwear and fell a lot. Â Cotton briefs with those "nice flat seams" are definitely available. Pro Mountain Sports
The wool type will surprise you. Anyone here besides me like'em?
Couloir
To help combat those unsightly VPLs, I would highly recommend a fashionable mohair thong. Warm, yet functional.

RogerJ
My success has been with the ex-officio (sp?) stuff. I wore the same pair this past weekend (July 21-22-23) in some pretty warm conditions. My girlfriend kissed me when I got home and the dogs did not run away in terror which is a change from the REI brand ones I used a few times that drove tent mates to bivvy. Â I know from friends in the clothing industry that the silver threads mentioned earlier seem to do the trick as a rule. Â Hope this helps. browntoe98
I love wool. Ibex, Smartwool... I just talked with this guy at Patagonia - they're offering a wool line this coming winter. That Merino is the bomb. Â Relatively heavy, though, when stacked up against Capilene.
browntoe98
I guess I should add that I also love sheep.
gary_hehn
I tried going commando once, to save weight - how anal! Bad idea, it was not good, I don't recommend it. I've had good luck with patagucci capilene briefs, but I've gotten great reviews on Under Armour shirts, their products might be worth checking into. Stefan
swim trunks. that's all. not the ones down to the knees, but to mid thigh heighth. Â light. dry fast. have pockets. long enough to stop chaffing between thighs. they hold the middle man well.
MountaingirlBC
I like the Mountain Hardware ones too. They dry really fast so you can wash 'em, eat breakfast & wear them again.
jon
The Exofficio and Icebreaker Merino have worked really well for me.
