slothrop Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 It looks like Highway 20 is closed for a good stretch due to a landslide. I can't find any more news about it than this (click on "North Cascade HWY SR20"): web page Quote
slothrop Posted October 18, 2003 Author Posted October 18, 2003 Holy shit, it's closed for the SEASON: web page Quote
Beck Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 it's closed, and they are going to leave all the debris, etc until after the winter. that will make opening up slower as rocks and trees slow down the snow moving equipment. Quote
geordie Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 My sources tell me a culvert blocked up and blew out a section of road. If it's at MP 126 (which is what I heard, that makes it West of Colonial Creek CG and ... WATUSI RODEO. Me - I just hope the flooding between Concrete and Marbles subsides so I can get back to my house and move out.. Quote
slothrop Posted October 18, 2003 Author Posted October 18, 2003 Are you having to move out because of the floods? Quote

I would imagine that given the location of the slides, the DOT is going to make an effort to clear them now and not wait until spring. By the time the repairs are made, however, it will probably be time to close the road anyway. This does suck. I always look forward to some "pre-closure" turns up there. Quote
philfort Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 c'mon sam, Beck must know. He's been in meetings all week with president of the DOT Their website says it's going to be closed at Colonial Creek campground for the winter. Is this really true??? Usually closes at the Ross Lake TH... Quote

Good luck Geordie. I guess you may have to make some freinds with DOT folks.. or just flash your badge and say its official bussiness.....man this sucks no 20!! Quote
North_Cascades_Mtn_Guides Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 For those of you hoping to climb at Wa Pass this fall, Hwy 20 is also closed on the east side at Silver Star Ck gate. While it is still reasonable to ride a bike up from there, plan accordingly if you come over to the Methow. Quote
mattp Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 If they close highway 20 at Thunder Creek, maybe there will be room to park off the road there instead of parking in the chain-removal lane and getting a ticket. Quote
Lambone Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Too bad the DOT didn't post a photo of the slide, I'd like to see it...that's a bummer. Quote
Necronomicon Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 They removed 200 dumptruck loads to open the road to New Halem LAMBONE: I just "got" your location Quote
Lambone Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 isn't the necronomicon sort of a helping friendly book? Quote
leejams Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Just saw some video of the damage up there. Pretty safe to say it will be closed for quite awhile. Tore the shit up. Makes you wonder what other damage is done to trails and side roads. Quote

Thnak Jesus that your Trail Park Pass fees will be spent on repairing the damage to trails, instead of on sgns telling you that you need to pay a fee, and paying for printing tickets, and paying The Tool to write tickets all day long. wayne Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 I hope there's something left after the rainiest day ever? Quote
AllYouCanEat Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 Read this on kirotv.com... "...On SR 20, state transportation crews were trying to clear culverts and limit damage, Holter said. "We have large sections of roadway that have washed out. We have guardrails hanging in the air," Holter said. And while the road is usually closed through mid-April, repairs must be made immediately. "If we leave it alone, it will continue to erode the roadway and be much more expensive" to fix...." Quote
Alpinfox Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 They showed some pics of Hwy20 on the news tonight. It's pretty fucked in several places and they claimed there were 4 new landlides on it today! Quote

MPaul_Hansen Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 There are also a number of 'washouts' [as oppose to slides]. One significant west side washout [impassable to cars] is located at the start of the Pyramid Lake trailhead. This is about 1 mile east, more or less, of Gorge Reservoir, impounded by Gorge Dam [the dam is 2+ miles east of Newhalem, WA]. Quote
dbb Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 I'll say, here's a picture a friend sent me: that is so suck!! Quote
