Snoqualmie Pass - Kendall Circumnavigation 1/28/2012

Don't know if it was yours, but seeing a beat in uptrack made us figure we could move faster than the next storm. -
Trip: Snoqualmie Pass - Kendall Circumnavigation Date: 1/28/2012 Trip Report: Friends and I have been talking about skiing on the north side of Kendall for some time. Maps and pictures make the skiing look good. Then again you have to spend a bit of time in upper Silver Creek, or the Kendall Peak avalanche firing line. We checked out an entry point one day, but thick clouds made visibility sketchy. Finally I saw a nice day with a lower avalanche potential. Cman and I decided to ski it on Saturday. Without fail NOAA forecasts started going downhill. When we left the parking lot we figured we could lap the south slopes if things got worse. Looking up at the Kendall Summit Ridgeline [img:center]https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-qUAdvGFIx9I/TyYlA7DobhI/AAAAAAAABls/zh7bAuH9YzY/s640/1_SEL2-2012-01-28-Kendall_P.png[/img] When we reached the ridgeline we could see clouds dropping and the wind picked up [img:center]https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fksDvn7nmIo/TyW0uHOmsLI/AAAAAAAABko/_UnL2QAQdEM/s1024/2_SEL3-2012-01-28_Kendall_N.png[/img] Our bad weather backup plan for skiing out Gold Creek generated some laughs. After a couple minutes talking about wind and clouds we decided to go for it. Cman and Silver Basin with Red Mountain in the Distance [img:center]https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-EIQWWzTCd7c/TyW0pb4eZ7I/AAAAAAAABkY/otZRvSIPwOM/s1440/3_SEL5-2012-01-28-Kendall_P.png[/img] Snow in Silver Creek basin was nice. A little wind packed but not bad. Entry Chute [img:center]https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-2pU2K9OJths/TyW0FdmiGBI/AAAAAAAABkQ/ZDAtv963e_M/s640/4_SEL6-2012-01-28_Kendall_N.png[/img] After a nice ski in Silver Basin we started climbing back towards Commonwealth Basin. There was no wind in Silver Creek Basin, but you could see it blowing on top of Kendall. Looking back. We skied a line to the right of the tallest rock spire [img:center]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SMefsqVLgAg/TyWz3S2UZlI/AAAAAAAABkI/36eqEzB6XMk/s912/6_SEL8-2012-01-28-Kendall_P.png[/img] Cornices on Kendall summit ridge [img:center]https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-aL4pd69IDS0/TyWyezrXCcI/AAAAAAAABjw/zRp4SbBAQZs/s912/7_SEL9-2012-01-28_Kendall_N.png[/img] We made the ridgeline and looked at the top of Kendall. [img:center]https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6FEmf4GW8lE/TyWybZqLknI/AAAAAAAABjo/Nyk8WyxNOBg/s912/8_SEL10-2012-01-28-Kendall_.png[/img] If it wasn't so windy summiting Kendall would be easy, but we figured it was time to get the hell out of Dodge. Mt Snoqualmie and Commonwealth Basin [img:center]https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-W6_hrfhAbaw/TyWzc7D5snI/AAAAAAAABkA/mhXRyqj_Dqg/s640/9_SEL11-2012-01-28-Kendall_.png[/img] The snow near the top of the ridge was nice, but it eventually turned to Cascade cement. Commonwealth with Summit West in the distance [img:center]https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-oqzQkeBPsxw/TyWwa-CFGLI/AAAAAAAABjQ/6_j82Ffw034/s912/11_SEL13-2012-01-28_Kendall.png[/img] As always lot of folks on the trail lower down with the skiing version of the game Frogger. We timed things out nicely. It started raining after we were in the car. Fun stuff Here's a route map http://www.hillmap.com/m/agtzbG9wZW1hcHBlcnIQCxIIU2F2ZWRNYXAYiIUODA Approach Notes: Windblown powder and ice near ridgelines

Matt brings up a good point. I was with a group attempting an 8,000 meter peak. Our permit was for a route on the Tibetan side. The Chinese Liaison Officer attempted to get us to drive from 7,000 to 17,000 in two days. We argued. Due to a kerosene spill on our gear we got one extra day at 12,000 to clean stuff. At base camp we were all taking diamox and paranoid. Within a couple days our group doctor developed pulmonary edema. We then had to argue with the liaison officer to get the doctor on a jeep and back down to 7,000. Our point being he's on oxygen now; when O2 runs out he's dead. This all took place with nothing more than sitting in trucks and walking around the area near base camp. Most folks in our group and nearby groups had no problems, but stuff can happen without much warning and or technical climbing. Things might be peachy, but then again?

I keep hearing stuff about a moon base. I hope it ends up as cool as this [video:youtube] [video:youtube]
-
Yep that's all there, but there is some real discussion of soloing on the Big R. JayB, Off White, Matt, or Snoboy get to make the call.
-
Spray? Maybe. I believe the point of applying for a solo permit is to provide on duty rangers with extra information about climbers on the mountain. You show up with the solo permit pay the regular fee and state the route you intend to climb. That way the park can notify rangers in the general area of the route that there will be a soloist climbing X route today through the end of the permit date.
-
It's the heads up/alert note for rangers on active duty when Marmot Prince shows up to solo.

The truth is unpopular, since lies are comforting.

I ride the bus downtown fairly often. Quite often bus drivers announces the stores and other features at the next bus stop. That said, given the conditions the driver might have been uptight about running the bus off the road and or crashing. Uptight folks can loose diplomatic skills

I think you'd have to read the OPEN Act then read SOPA/PIPA and spot the differences. Better yet a lawyer should

Drive like this team does [video:youtube] -
Use the day off CC tomorrow to train for the challenge.
-
More folks need to read MOS to learn about training and preparation for winter adventures near or above Paradise.

Spraying at a 5.4 level is pretty simple. 5.10 spray or better provides a lot more satisfaction.
-
3-inch base here! Shredding tomorrow

Snow in Lake City sucka [img:center]http://www.danbbs.dk/~rep/pictures/animation/skianim.gif[/img]

That is part of the reason everybody in the group needs a shovel. Some folks could be uncovering the victim while others help move/transfer snow further from the pit.

Who the F thinks this way? You do. To exemplify your problems you forgot the symbol in your post.

The French would deport any Michelin Man with orange high-vis colors. I'm sure Newt would welcome him and give him a new American name. seal of approval
-
Tell the rangers you'll wear your Michelin Man outfit while on glaciers. In the event of crevasse fall you intend to bounce out. [img:center]http://www.magossip.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/michelin-man.jpg[/img]
-
Tell the rangers your climb will take a bit longer than most ascents due to the weight of all the nitro you're bringing for safety.
