I spent a year plus working on the Fort Lewis base. The place seemed pretty nice. The only fault I found was they had a Popeyes Fried Chicken. They should have listened to Oprah and Lenny Wilkens and gone with Ezell's

You got a problem with Corpus Christi? I hear you can go to the beach on a blazing hot day for a swim. After walking a mile into the gulf you're knee deep.

I believe all boarder guards have it in for foreigner. Getting harasser going into Canada is normal for state side folks. I've talked to a few Canucks who get the third degree from American boarder guards.

I always get grilled about hotel reservations going into Canada. One time on the way to a six day backcountry traverse the boarder guard ask where we were staying on the trip. I told him we'd get a motel in Pemberton that night, but after that we didn't know. The guard didn't like my answer until I explained we were going to use a tent since there's a lack of four star hotels in the Coast Range. The second time I went to a conference in Kelona. The guard wanted to know, "Why don't you have hotel reservations." I told her I'd been to Kelona before and I was pretty sure I could find a motel. If that didn't pan out I had a sleeping bag and a pickup with a canopy. Of course one time I had to walk into the station for grilling. Guard, "How many times have you been to Canada sir?" Me, "A lot of times." Guard, "What does that mean?" Me, "It means I've been visiting BC since I was five years old and I didn't think it was necessary to keep a log book." Fortunately I was smart enough not to say something like, "Yeah I know Canada is a foreign country but come on."

Yep, It kind of depends on how technical the climbing you plan to do is. If it's M7 then silverettas may be the best bet. If the trip is primarily cruising long distances with an occasional moderate to easy climb then lighter AT gear rules. Dynafits bindings and their TLT boots are pretty light and provide good ankle flexability. Light is right speed is safety...

Something like this [video:youtube] Sometimes ya gotta yell. All you know is you're mad. Putting exact reasons into words is harder.

Fat skis can be sweet in powder, but suck on icy uptracks. I've seen folks with rocker skis (fat) struggle on the uptrack. Good edging on an icy traverse is important. The greater the width the harder it is to chop time after time. I'm not too much of a quiver guy. I want one pair of skis that functions well in whatever I ski. Everybody's different of course. For some skiing powder is more important, and fat skis fit the bill. That is something I think about when looking at skis.

It isn't just individual skills/knowledge. Group mindset can kick in. Beautiful day, nice snow, we're having a great time... Sometimes a group will take risks that each individual might not. Choada_Boy is right. Accidents can happen when people with lots of experience let down their guards. I can relate to that one. This one time I was standing on an 8-foot ladder and...
