My dad grew up near the tail end of WW2. Back then nobody got to choose whether or not to sign up with the military. Now a days you can look at a military recruiting add and sign up or walk away. Personally I would not sign up, but that's just based on my feelings towards the current fighting the US is involved in.
-
Klick here dumbshit I was hoping that you and Dave Schuldt would sign up.
-
Yeah I expect the helmet to be a PITA in the backcountry, but after 1 head injury I'd rather whine about an annoying helmet than suffer the down side of head injury again.

I only ever bought one all day lift ticket at Shames. The rest of the time I would just buy one ride tickets so you could get to the top of the trees and then truck on up to these great 2,000' north facing bc runs. That what I liked about it a little postage stamp ski area in the middle of sick shit. I had a great lift assist bc ski vacation that winter. We drove up Vancouver Island to ski at Mt Cain for a week. There was fantastic lift assist bc skiing there, and we toured and partied with all the locals there. Then we got on the ferry to Prince Rupert and headed to Shames where we did the same. After that Rogers Pass for the pure stuff and then Whitewater for more lift assist bc skiing. I may as well do a plug here. Mt Cain Shames mountain Whitewater You'll just have to figure out Rogers pass on your own.

Safety straps, Safety straps, Safety straps. Safety straps put the fear of god in you, and that's a good thing. I remember as a teen seeing folks that needed stitches after a released ski kicked back and hit them in the face. You need to respect what you're doing. My big bow to safety this year is to wear a helmet. I've never worn one before, but it sounds like something I should take seriously.

I've done much better than 9s in the past, but right now after a long period of being injured I'm happy to say I led a 5.6 at E38. I hope to do a lead at Index this year....maybe a 5.7

The best parties I've ever been to feature folks doing funny idiotic things. I would hate to take that away from a party by making it a mass public event where people feel uptight. I'll be headed to Rope Up straight outa Spokompton

I've forgotten my first 9 at Index, but Rodger's corner is a good one!

I bet Schuldt-zee is the Special forces hot new recruit.

[TR] Yak Peak, Coquihalla Pass, BC - Yak Crak 6/19/2007
AlpineK replied to devinejohnny's topic in British Columbia/Canada
I went up to do Yak Crack a few years back. We were on route, but we got up to pitch 8 or whatever and both I and my partner backed off the crux as we found it. It was a overhanging munge chimney with no pro. A while later we went back and did Yak Check and it was fantastic. -
Special weather statement from NOAA: ...SNOW SHOWERS ARE LIKELY IN THE OLYMPICS AND CASCADES ON FRIDAY.. A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL USHER IN A COLDER AIR MASS ON FRIDAY THAT WILL CAUSE SNOW LEVELS TO PLUMMET AS LOW AS THE 4000 FOOT LEVEL. SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE LESS THAN 3 INCHES. HOWEVER THE AIR MASS WILL ALSO BE UNSTABLE ENOUGH FOR A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS...WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS. It ain't ski time this weekend but it's getting closer. :moondance: :moondance: :moondance: :moondance: :moondance: :moondance: :moondance: :moondance:

I've spent a week at that place and the lift assist to some fucking amazing bc skiing rules. I'd plunk down some cash. Who else is in?
-
I'm sorry to say but I have caused 2 minor avalanches. Both times the depth was <6" of slide. Both times I released out of both skis with straps not breaks; I then went into full on arrest mode and dug through the avy debris and stopped. Because I had the skis on straps they were still attached to me and I was able to get them back on and complete the now safe run. I hope to never repeat stuff like that, but it did convince me that straps are better then hiking down thousands of feet to search for your skis.

And then spend 20 minutes reassembling the board to go downhill again Sure, they are reasonably efficient for yo-yoing (fat skis + skins are about equal), but for any non simple terrain they suck, and so do the fiddly parts get lost/broken mechanisms. Exactly. jlag I will have been on skis for 42 years come December. I've never split boarded, but I've been watching them for as long as they've been around. The one key thing I've noted is their amazing lack of presence in the backcountry. The only way that will change is when I see splitboarders at all the popular bc ski spots or you and your buddies post a lot of trip reports.

I would say that my main impression comes from touring. I see plenty of folks heading up the trail with AT or Tele setup everywhere I go, but I never see any snowboard travel in the backcountry. There are plenty of boarders at lift served areas but not in the bc. There are a lot of low angle spots on descents where you can move fast if you can kick and glide, but that's a simple procedure for somebody on AT. If you have to stop and take your board off then rerig it you end up sucking up time. I may not be totally up on split boards. I understand using them uphill, but on a low angle descent they don't look beefy enough to stand up to a standard kick and glide descent.
-
I tried it for you. I hope you find a spot to live.
-
My dad was on the first descent of the run that is now Exterminator at CM. They were inspecting the slopes prior to the resort being started. They were on AT gear. In fact they were on the old school 210 cm Head Standards back in those days. I'm not suggesting going back to the rad old skis or even cable bindings, but I have a ton or respect for what the locals did back in the day.
-
Hey man snowboards look cool, and the little bit I've done was fun. The problem is they are totally innefficient for backcountry travel. I've done trips with a bunch of tele folks and one boarder to Rodgers Pass. The boarder had snowshoes for uphill travel, and he was hating life on all the tours we did. He even took forever to get back to the hut on the low angle downhill back to the hut. Yes you can get a split board, but by all accounts they remain harder to use than any type of ski for travel. Feel free to prove me wrong, but I never see any boarders in the backcountry. As for tele they do work, but I learned about bc skiing in the early 70s from old timers who used strictly AT skis. Tele was a crazy hippie thing when I first learned about it. I have skied with a ton of tele folks but I'm a 4th generation NW native, so I'll stick with what most of the locals used back in the day.
-
Telemarking was big with the dirty hippies in the 70s and later. I tried it a few times when people told me how pure it was. I say why reinvent the wheel (so to speak)AT rules. If I were to say one thing good about tele it would be that it's better than snowboarding.
-
It IS a school-sponsored sport at VA Tech, ESPECIALLY during Engineer's Week! Hmmm you probably went to school in one of those sorry ass east coast schools where the drinking age has always been 21. At the UI we were legally in bars at 19 back in the day and all those sorry suckers from WSU were willing to risk DUI just to get a drink when all we had to do is walk to the booze.
-
From a local perspective in the NW Tele skiing was a rare thing till the 70s. My dad did a ton of backcountry skiing around here in the 50s and 60s and for the most part tele skiing was something for jumpers. Most everybody around the PNW had what is essentially an AT setup. The rise in tele skiing is the fault of a bunch of fuckin hippies. My dad has a cool collection of old AT skis in his basement.
