[font:Times New Roman] John Dyer passed away.
I've been ask to post this on Cascade Climbers.
John was about 93 years old.
For those of you who don't know, John was an active climber for years and years. His most famous climbing was as part of the first ascent of Shiprock. John along with David Brower, Raffi Bedayn, and Bestor Robinson made the ascent in 1939. If you want more information there is a good story about the ascent in the book Fifty Classic Climbs.
I first met John when I was a couple months old, so I don't remember much about it. Over the years I do remember seeing him. Recently I lived a few blocks from his house, so I would occasionally visit him and his wife Polly. The last time I saw him was a couple months ago. He was telling me about splitting a pile of firewood in his backyard. I thought that was a pretty impressive thing for him be doing.
He is survived by his wife Polly Dyer who has been active in conservation efforts in Washington for a long time.
