1. Once again dipshit that would be the northeast side of the mountain. Climbers prepare for climbing by: 1 reading guidebooks by trusted authors. 2 Talking to people who have any firsthand experience with a route or routes in a region. 3 Checking the weather then either changing plans or packing accordingly. 4 Always be prepared to change plans and bail if either things don't look good or your gut tells you to bail. This can happen at any point on the climb. That's some of the basics. Electronic devices are no substitute for good judgement. Even then accidents can happen. Everybody knows that climbing is dangerous, but climbers are willing to accept that risk (some of the time).
2. So Trad Guy you're kind of new to these parts of the world. Let me be the first to tell you you're not in the North West. Around here It's called the Northwest. Other than making that minor error you've demonstrated a massive lack of knowledge of climbing in the Northwest. Climbers have been active in remote mountains for years and years. My dad was an active climber in the 50s. Let me tell you something... They didn't have cell phones and GPS in the 50s Despite that some amazing climbs happened here. I started climbing in the 70s and I learned then that you have to be aware that you are going places where you can't call for help. That is what you have to prepare for. Today we have a lot of fancy pants devices that we can use, but that doesn't mean that things are different. You still need to be prepared to go climbing knowing that you can't pick up your cell phone and dial 911. I was down on the northeast side of Rainier this last weekend. Guess what There was no cell phone reception. Go ahead and post links to your stupid website. I ain't clicking on them, and I would urge everybody else reading this to do the same. You obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
3. Yeah now I'm going to buy a gun to defend myself against Fairweather and his whack job buddies. Folks in Spokane have the extreme version of the game
4. New extreme sport! Climbing with mis-matched shoes! Back a number of years ago a partner and I did the complete north ridge of Stuart. My buddy led the first pitch. I followed and just as I reached the belay he freaked out and said I've gotta rap down. He takes off and starts searching the base of the route for one of his approach shoes. He didn't find it. He then came back up and we completed the route. It was funny solo climbing up the standard north ridge route past a heard of Mounties. After summiting we decided to stick to rock for the descent, so we descended the west ridge. When we got to the snow at the saddle my partner put his one approach shoe on and descended the glacier with a rock shoe and the approach shoe back to our camp. This took a while, so we ended up spending another night at camp. He was dreading walking down to the car with his new shoe selection. Early in the AM he got up and wandered ten feet of so from camp. While walking he found his missing approach shoe sitting on the ground. Apparently he hadn't focused very well on his knots when he first put on his rock shoe. In the end he was pretty happy to walk back to the car in more appropriate footwear.
5. YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE WHERE *I* AM RIGHT NOW!
6. Were they stinking up the mountains with smoke?
7. Why not talk to Cliff Mass He'll tell you everything you need to know about the weather. One of the things he'll tell you is NOAA is the source information for everybody including the UW. Did I mention he works at the UW. I saw him give a talk on the 2006 winter storm effect on tree failure. He's an interesting guy.
8. If I remember right she did pretty well at some of the axe competitions. I'm sure she's smart enough not to travel to Sweden to cut down a old but small tree. Oregon has some big trees that are a hell of a lot more exciting to cut down. Certainly she's a lot smarter than somebody like Pink or that Ring and Claw fellow, but anybody with an IQ above 10 is, so that isn't saying much. Mostly I'm back in this thread for the
9. Um Scott, I wasn't going to rat you out, but next time try and be a little sneakier with your newest avatar.

That's a great blast from the past. Hey Kathy. What's up with the cross gender thing. Don't worry that's cool if that's what you want to do.
11. Here's a TR of skiing on the Interglacier posted in freshiez Interglacier
12. Trip: Rainier Steamboat Prow - Interglacier Date: 6/22/2008 Trip Report: [font:Times New Roman] Skiing on the Interglacier I haven't been on or skied on Rainier in ages. I was really psyched to get up on the mountain. Hugh and I hiked our skis in to Starbow (Glacier Basin ) on the trip up. After that the route goes straight up the slope to Steamboat Prow. View up the Interglacier [font:Times New Roman] We skied to the ridge crest just short of the top of Steamboat Prow. From hear there was a nice view of the big guy above us. Rainier. View up the Emmons glacier [font:Times New Roman] The skiing down was nice. We had nice spring snow up high. The snow got a little thick part way down the glacier, but it wasn't bad. View down the Interglacier [font:Times New Roman] We skied below Starbow down the river. Eventually we decided to cross the river back to the trail side of the valley. This provided an exciting river crossing. We ran into some other folks making the crossing here too. We all had to do some wading. One of the guys in the other group managed to fall in. It was only a stumble though, and it provided all of us with a laugh. The trip was some nice June skiing. Gear Notes: I took all the standard ski gear. This time I took approach shoes. You don't have to have them, but it sure was nice. Approach Notes: The trail in is kind of messy due to some river course shifts. I'd give the trail in a rating of Class 2+ or 3-. It isn't too bad though. Right now an early start will allow you to start your descent when the snow is in the ideal skiing condition.
13. They figured it out without cutting it down. Yeah they say this tree sprouted just after the ice moved back.
14. Here's the latest find on the oldest known living tree. Swedish Spruce

Tree Sitting

It's good to see folks who care about trees and are willing to stage a protest in a really funny way. Dumpster Muffin in a stand off with the man. I found this info on an arborist listserve. The fellow who sent this out said he looked it over and the protesters weren't doing anything too harmful.
19. I've skied Rainier in August. At the time it wasn't the best ever, but it was pretty good. This is a good year to be out skiing till late in the summer.
20. Back in the 80s I remember climbing some sandstone like rock on some private property somewhere near Pacific Top Soil. We only did one toprope pitch then the property owner came over and yelled at us.
21. I second the advice to get an early start! You do not want to be on the wall when the thunderstorms are out! There's an easy trail to the base, but I'd recommend hiking up the standard walkup route to Chasm View then rap down to Broadway. It's faster and more fun to do it that way then scramble up the chimney to Broadway.

Here's some fun news. Hippie protesters sure are a funny lot. I like trees quite a bit, and I think it's worth going to the effort to promote proper tree care and protect trees. Here's a case where the nasty University pigs and the Hippies both win. Everybody Wins News report prior to judges ruling Here's some fun YouTube stuff d-nkFkQUAkU The Verdict I'm glad to see the University used arborist to start the eviction.
24. No matter how much oil the US produces itself oil prices are still subject to international markets. Oil prices ain't going down much if any. It's all mostly uphill. Fuel is one issue we need to deal with even if you aren't a global warming believer. Lighter smaller cars would help, but an even bigger help would be passenger trains, light rail, bus service.... Riding bikes and walking more could help too. That will also help folks reduce their body weight too as a side benefit.
25. I don't normally like to use the word retarded, but in this case I will. I can't believe that there are retards who try and post articles by retarded legislators against gay marriage. If they want to get hitched they should be able to go right ahead. On a side note: Pink and Kevbone just come clean with all of us and tell us that you have an upcoming wedding.
