Everybody needs to get married and travel to New Zealand! My wife on Zurbriggen's Ridge in December of 2002. We were pretty sure we were going to survive at this point, but there were some tense moments (and tears) on the ice face below. I distinctly remember looking down between my frontpoints, the rope connecting us with nothing in between, and yelling "YOU MUST NOT FALL!!" .....Till death do us part:

You are EXACTLY right @Off_White. We talked of this. What a much cooler way to do it, though a bit longer. And you are also right that it has fallen out of favor to approach Torment that way. Though we did run into some guys this past summer who had gone in right ahead of us. Even the rangers I've talked with have never been up Torment Basin, including Kevork.

Although I don't use a canister stove in winter, I have heard sitting the canister in a little water helps. But I think the MSR isobutane mix performs much better in cold. Maybe use that fuel? And yes, you need no new snow for that route to be "fun". Fresh snow means you go skiing instead! But you know that now. Good effort for getting up there, not an easy slog with fresh snow in the boulders! For comparison, the mountain biking on Galbraith was pretty great this weekend.
