Climbing partner/group for Rainier Winter Climb
JasonG replied to Trevor Thomas's topic in Climbing Partners
Hey @Trevor Thomas....I moved this to the partners forum. Also, and you probably know this, but it is pretty unlikely the weather and conditions will line up the week of 12/27. Rainier in winter isn't something you can typically nail down very far in advance. Good luck! -

You are EXACTLY right @Off_White. We talked of this. What a much cooler way to do it, though a bit longer. And you are also right that it has fallen out of favor to approach Torment that way. Though we did run into some guys this past summer who had gone in right ahead of us. Even the rangers I've talked with have never been up Torment Basin, including Kevork.

Although I don't use a canister stove in winter, I have heard sitting the canister in a little water helps. But I think the MSR isobutane mix performs much better in cold. Maybe use that fuel? And yes, you need no new snow for that route to be "fun". Fresh snow means you go skiing instead! But you know that now. Good effort for getting up there, not an easy slog with fresh snow in the boulders! For comparison, the mountain biking on Galbraith was pretty great this weekend. -
Time to mix it up again. Scan from a slide. November 2006, Annapurna massif showing off some nice light:

The Voile system is pretty solid and works well. I used it for about 18 years until recently switching it up to tech toes and fancier plate bindings with Atomic Backlands with Phantom levers, blah, blah, blah. One thing to consider is that the splitboard will not be as efficient as the rest of you on the uptrack or rolling terrain. So you might want to plan tours with the splitboard in mind. I think that once spilt, things are pretty similar to your AT gear. Just think worse on traverses and a wider track (he'll have to break trail a bit more, even in the rear). Things work better on the up with splitboards if you use AT boots (and voile mtn plates) instead of regular snowboard boots and bindings, but it suffers on the down without significant boot mods. I guess I am not aware of much in the way of splitboard resources other than this forum: http://splitboard.com/talk/

He'll grow up quick. I would get a 154 Voile Spartan. Nothing fancy, but it will work for years and is the best deal out there for a new splitboard with all the bits. You'll need to budget for poles, beacon, pack, etc. And I would recommend AIRE Avy 1 for the entire family, esp. if adults that will be taking him out haven't had it. As you probably know, you can get into a lot of trouble in the backcountry. https://www.voile.com/voile-spartan-splitboard.html Good luck!

But where is the adventure in that?

It is more like you need to spend an impressive amount of money to get a modern full frame sensor! Shooting RAW with these modern sensors allows you to bring out a lot of detail in the highlights and shadows at the same time. So, while, it isn't an editing "trick" I certainly did edit the image to be more what our eyes saw in the moment. Sensors still aren't as good as we we have to see the world with (at least during daylight hours)!
