  1. I always use a rinsed-out plastic Gatorade or soda pop bottle for this purpose. Nalgene bottles are way heavy, 5 oz for a one liter versus 1 oz for a one liter Gatorade bottle. 'Course for a longer trip, where weight really becomes a consideration.....well, there are other lightweight alternatives out there.
  2. No, driving a car doesn't work, either. Take this from a girl who had her 1987 Soobie wagon stolen from her off-street parking less than six months ago. This was just so they could get the stereo out, which at probably 50 bucks street value, was worth about what the car's worth.

    Flagging

Well, I can't speak for PK, but in my case, that was not my intent. I was merely trying to participate in the discussion.

    Flagging

Toilet paper burns just fine even if it has pee on it. Personally, I am not a huge fan of flagging, or even cairns, except perhaps to mark key turns and crossings. I spend a lot of time off-trail, and I guess it seems a bit more like an adventure if my route's not flagged or cairned. That said, I've been thankful for a marking or two to keep me from getting cliffed or way off-route. Also, there seems to be two schools on off-trail travel: one is to try to minimize impact by following in the footsteps of others who have been there before, which causes a boot path to form, or to try and disperse the footsteps and minimize wear in any one area. Personally, I think the boot path is a slightly better option.
  5. D'oh! I thought it was "Klen-key."
  6. I just drove by that place earlier today and felt reminiscent....used to be a big stagehand hangout.
  7. OK. I read the first two pages and the last page, and I don't know where this is happ'ning. May or may not stop by, just wondering when it is, and where and when people are meeting.
  8. REI may be a big company, but Wal-Mart? Hmmm.....
  9. You'd need a lot of Cornish Game hens to make a big enough pyramid to get you as high as you could get with a long stick clip.
  10. Looking for current Ptarmigan Traverse conditions. Anyone been in there lately? Weather permitting, plan to flail through it in a week or so. Interested in particulars that might make a glacier-tard take pause. They *say* mere mortals like myself can do it this time of year.
  11. And I bet you are making boodles of money down there, ya bugger. I loaded out "Rent" tonight, to pay the "rent."
  12. Thanks for posting that. The first one was an excellent read, amnd even got me thinking it's not such a terrible idea to close the road at Dingford.

    chatterbox

    Anyone chat anymore? Like now?
  14. I don't think we know who the culprit was here yet.
  15. So I have a pair of 41s coming, and I got another pair coming from another source, so if anyone still wants a pair of these and they are looking for a 41, let me know, and I'll sell them to you for what I paid for them. Otherwise I'll return them, but would rather not eat the postage both ways!!!!
  16. Is this a climbing site....WTF....?
  17. Please do, Lowell. The Mountaineers Books people don't even have the whole collection at their disposal, but the club library apparently has close to it. Say what you will about the Mountaineers, but they have put out some fine books.
  18. The "giving something back" aspect of doing volunteer work is not half bad either.
  19. volunteer for your pass
  20. Just curious, Ry, if you are not up there for recreation, than what for? Typically they give you a pass if you are doing TM, only other thing I can think of is maybe you are doing resource work, eg counting animals or trees? Otherwise you'd need a pass.
  21. The FP money stays in the district where you buy the pass.
  22. Coupla things: 1. At least in Washington, the FS isn't really in the business of timber sales anymore. I'm sure you know they don't keep the money they get from timber sales anyway. Seems since the FS doesn't generate a lot from timber sales anymore, the Congress is less than forthcoming with the money they need to run the forest. 2. No, I am not currently using the public education system, but I did as a kid, and I'm happy to pay my share to help other peole's kids get an education. 3. I do follow the stewardship and fee demo threads pretty regularly around here, and anyone who knows me might say I'm a fairly active citizen WRT forest conservation issues. I find the conversations entertaining, but sometimes after a while I see a lot of whining about a 30 dollar pass for something we all use a LOT. I pay money for a fishing license, why wouldn't I have to pay for FS TH parking? I don't know, it seems that as we Eymanize our regular taxes, we're going to have to find other ways to pay for things. The money to maintain the roads, trails, and services isn't going to fall out of the air.
  23. Considering that Congress has basically eviscerated the FS's budget, I'd kindly suggest you whiners STFU and pay the money. ESPECIALLY this year after the weather event of last fall did so much road and trail damage all over the Cascades. That or don't use the forest. If you can't afford a pass, you can do a couple of days of volunteer work to pay for it.
  24. Thanks, Pax. They only have a couple of sizes left, but one of them is my size. I tried on a pair before I bought them, and as I've expereinced before, the La Sportivas maybe run a little small. I'm normally a Wns 9, and I got a 41/Wns 9.5.
  25. I thought we didn't use the "c" word here. Who was talking to you, anyway? I sure wasn't.
