Once again, playing Devil's Advocate here, do you also object to the double taxation of paying NP fees and other fees to federal attractions? I hate the way the parking pass deal is set up as much as the next person, but trailhead and trail maintenance does cost a boodle of $$. If you use the woods a lot, like most of the people here, I'm sure you are more than getting your money's worth in terms of gravel in the parking lots, privy maintenance, trail maintenance, what have you.

Not distinguishing between TH and non-TH thefts here, but I have never heard of a theft of a car stereo that had its faceplate removed. Replacement faceplates generally cost about the same as the entire stereo, and pro thieves know this. The guys who recently got mine downtown were so thorough they stole the owner's manual too.

How much is each person paying to get in??? The Grand Canyon has become so congested that a public transportation system is planned. On an average summer day, 6,500 cars show up at the South Rim, but there are only 2,400 parking spaces. More fees to park more cars? Why not charge the users of these popular tourist traps. " Not to play Devil's Advocate or anything, but does this take into account the fact that the NPS builds stuff to last nearly forever, and with little or no maintenance? These costs seem extraordinary to me too, but not knowing what it takes to build things to last this way, it could be reasonable...? Also if you don't want to see high quality structures in the NPs, maybe you should push for them to go to poor quality ugly structures. The NP architecture is unique, so much so that book have been written about it, but hey, it's your money! And JJA... I bet you could get out of that ticket by taking 15 minutes to write a letter explaining circumstances and enclosing a copy of your pass...

Spectacle's a great suggestion. It's 9 miles via Pete, and I'm going to say 7 via Mineral Ck and Park Lakes. From there you can head up any number of peaks and/or cruise up to Glacier and or Chikamin Lakes. Nice country, and if there's a speck of snow I don't think the crowds will be insane. A lot of hikers are a-skeert of snow!

Couple of thought from someone who's been there: Try to be careful with the pain meds. It's a tough go when you first start walking again. A massage to do some lymphatic drainage and stimulate circulation will do your body good. If that's why GGK is asking if you are still in the 'ham, and he's offering you one, take him up on it. For what it's worth I just wrote up a pack test for WT and the best conclusion I came away with is fill the pack you want to buy with the stuff you are going to put in it. Different packs carry loads differently and advertised volumes are often incorrect. Try it on with your own stuff in it, take it home and try again, and then decide. A pack is something you are going to be stuck with for a long time.

It should take one phone call for you to set it up, here's all of the information you will need.

I had a fohnny feeling when the matter of the fee came up, it was going to be a completely different story. At the last one, we passed the hat and gave the money to mattp, who was gracious enough to reserve to site for us.
