The S200 has the exposure control and half-shutter press too. But it doesn't say what the shutter speed or aperature is, and there's no way to control it directly (set it at a given shutter speed or aperature.) Oh yeah, another the problem with the S200 is the contrast of the LCD changes significantly if you tilt the camera up or down, so sometimes I have a hard time getting the right exposure. The S400's LCD is significantly better, and I'm assuming the S410 and S500 are better than the S200 as well. It's not just me, my friends who have S400's comment on my LCD when they use my camera, and they have a hard time getting the right exposure.

I'm still using my Canon S200 (2.0 MP digital elph.) The image quality is rather good. I blew some of my pics from last summer up to 6x8, and they looked spectacular. As for the camera, I use it caving, climbing and hiking in all weather conditions. I've had it covered in frost, it's been rained on many times, the lens cover is bashed in, the CF Door is held on with duct tape, and the camera still takes great pics. I want to replace it with an S500 at this point. The major drawbacks in my eyes are the low-light pictures, (but with a lens that small, only a certain amount of light will be able to get in), and the lack of direct manual feedback/control (shutter speed, aperature.) For caving it would be nice to have a flash shoe, but that would make the camera bigger/heavier.

South Cascade Glacier - Gone in a century?

Hey Bushwhacker, were you the Iraqi information minister by any chance? -
So long as Central NY comes up (well, it's more eastern), don't forget about Canajoharie and Coxsackie. Not necessarily hard to pronounce, but funny none-the-less. Then there was the town (Rensselaer) near my school (Rensselaer). The town was pronounced REN-sa-ler, and my school was pronounced ren-seh-LEAR... named after the same person, spelled the same, but said rather differently.

If you're getting a verizon phone, watch out for the "all-digital" phones. Verizon has a surprising number of all-digital models, which would work fine for someone in the city. I had to trade my phone in after 2 weeks because the lack of analog scared me. Quite simply, if my partner is bleeding to death, and the only signal that gets to where I am is analog, I want to be able to make the call. I've already seen cell phones save one life. 911 worked great up high on Stuart. Greg, if you fall and are dying, should your partner *not* call 911 with a cell phone?

New lyrics to the theme from the Beverly Hillbillies! Come & listen to my story 'bout a boy named Bush. His I.Q. was zero & his head was up his tush. He drank like a fish while he drove all about. But that didn't matter 'cuz his daddy bailed him out- DUI ,that is. Criminal record. Cover-up. Well, the first thing you know little Georgie goes to Yale. He can't spell his name but they never let him fail. He spends all his time hangin' out with student folk. & that's when he learns how to snort a line of coke. Blow, that is- White gold. Nose candy. The next thing you know there's a war in Vietnam. Kin folks say, "George, stay at home with Mom." Let the common people get maimed & scarred. We'll buy you a spot in the Texas Air Guard. Cushy, that is - Country clubs. Nose candy..................... 20 yrs. later George gets a little bored. He trades in the booze, says that Jesus is his Lord. He says, "Now the White House is the place I wanna be." So he called his daddy's friends & they called the GOP. Falwell. Jesse Helms. Come Nov. 7, the election ran late. Kin folks said,"Jeb, give the boy your state!" "Don't let those colored folks get into the polls." So they put up barricades so they couldn't punch their holes- Chads, that is. Duval county. Miami-Dade. Before the votes were counted 5 Supremes stepped in. Told all the voters, "Hey we want George to win." "Stop counting votes!" was their solemn invocation. And that's how Georgie finally got his coronation. RIGGED, THAT IS......... ILLEGITIMATE........ NO MORAL AUTHORITY !! Y'all come vote now in 2004. Y'all hear? *************** Check here if you don't remember the tune: mp3 file Or to hear it without having to download: Embedded Tune

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned Sahale (suh-HALL-ee) yet...

I'd heard the guy who Goode is named after pronounced it "Good" as well, and that climbers have just mispronounced it. And down on this side of the Columbia, what about Tualatin (too-AH-la-tin) and Tigard (TIE-gerd). Then there's the ever present Deschutes (deh-SHOOTS), although that one's not bad. What about Suiattle? Is that sue-AHT-el, sue-AT-el, or something else?

wally, please explain to me how a woman in Nebraska choosing to have an abortion affects your life. Is she forcing her beliefs on you in any way, shape, or form that affects your life? Because you're sure as hell affecting her life if you shove your beliefs down her throat by forcing her to have the child.

Oh yeah! That's snowfield peak! I was wondering what that was, thinking it would be a fun climb. Turns out it's a mountain I climbed earlier this summer. And yes, it was a fun climb.

then why do you live there?

My experience debating conservatives is that the vast majority (of the ones I've debated) are dogmatically stuck on their stump and can't even consider thinking about entertaining the potential of seeing my point of view. I try to hear people out unless they are complete idiots (like the close-minded dogmatists I mentioned). Both sides are closed minded. Greg, your mind is no more open than the "liberal pussies" you claim to be nothing like.

At least Kerry has a respectable military service to talk about...

RBW, I really don't think I ever said I was TEACHING it. I went for a hike. Women followed. Can you possibly argue with that?

Last I checked, Gore not only got the popular vote in 2000, but also won in Florida...

I had scrambling and top rope (both rock and ice) experience from the Adirondacks when I moved out here, and I took the Mazama's Basic Class. While it was mostly review, I had a great time. That summer, I climbed every weekend (including things such as the Whitney Glacier on Shasta and the East Face of Jefferson.) So I took the intermediate class. Again, after the experience that I gained my first summer, the class was mostly review, yet still very much so worth it. The summer after that class, I again climbed every weekend, amongst them was the West Ridge of Forbidden Peak and the NE Face of Mt. Redoubt. Forbidden was with friends from the intermediate class and Redoubt was an official club climb. I never would have dreamed of doing either of these peaks if it wasn't for the Mazamas. Quite simply, where else are you going to find a lot of leaders with 20-30 years of experience (or more) that are happy to take you along with them on anything from an easy to a difficult climb? Many of the people on this site do have a lot of experience, some might even take you on a trip, but are they willing to show you the ropes and teach you all the way from where you are now to where you want to be? I've found many leaders who are willing to do that in the Mazamas.

Greg, if you support the current administration, I'll call you a hypocrite. While I won't say that the left is completely innocent of elitism, the neo-conservatives running this country are so full of it, it's scary. You complain about C4K forcing their opinion on you, yet look at the current administration. For example, they want to ban gay marriage because *THEY THINK IT'S WRONG*, which is purely their opinion, not an actual truth. The difference between C4K and the current administration is that you can ignore C4K, whereas the current administration actually has the power to pass laws. If you support the current administration (which in your defense you haven't actually said in this post,) you are a hypocrite for complaining about these issues with C4K.

My group got turned around last year on that mountain. We camped at Jerry Lakes, and made it to about 7500' on the south face. The attachment is a pic of the face, with our route in red, and the presumed route in green (we were expecting a rock climb and didn't have any snow protection with us, so we opted not to traverse the steep snowfield.) Is the presumed route remotely close to what you climbed? (I can provide a higher resolution pic without our route drawn in if you want to draw in your route.)

Fairweather, have you ever gone biking in Mass? Any time spent on a bike in Mass was time you were gambling with your life. Any future prez who'll bike in Mass is OK in my books. That's much more of a risk than W has ever taken...
