But the raven won't help you in ice or even really hard snow. That pick just plain sucks. For cheap usable axe check out the Grivel Pamir. Weighs a little more than a BD Raven, bu tthe pick is functional. Now I'm thoroughly confused. I've used my raven in hard snow and ice and it's worked just fine. I don't know where you're getting your information, but perhaps you should consider another source.

as for ice axe, I love my BD Raven. Simple, comfortable, relatively inexpensive. I feel it's a great all-around axe.

One of my friends in PMR has spoke of a LARGE slab directly down the hogsback before. (Somewhere between 6 and 9 feet deep.) Extremely rare? Well, yes, but the way I see it, sometimes it's just not worth climbing.

Personally, I like Portland. Climbing was the main reason I wanted to move to the PNW, though it's not the only reason, and Portland suits my needs just fine. However, after my 8th trip to the North Cascades last summer, I was really wishing I had chosen someplace a little north of Seattle.

Why should he trust you on an issue that he's certainly had years of experience with? Are you the Urinal God? You only get splash back if you have poor technique, or if you stand close enough to be the damn thing! I've pissed in plenty a urinal without splash back.

I've done it both ways. If I remember properly, self-arrest would certainly be interesting in some conditions, so some people prefer the security of a running belay.

The only way I'd consider skiing at meadows is a way that rips them off. That place seriously needs either a new owner or to get shut down. They will never get a single penny out of me.
