  2. Thanks for the information SEF.
  3. "All the experts are dead" Ed LaChappelle's reply when referred to as an expert. Ed is the author of ABC of Avalanche Safety. I knew one person who survived burial on a climbing trip, but his fingertips showed. I knew two others who didn't make it. Beacons were not used, and the terrain was suitable for steep skiing.
  4. Those without fear suffer from a lack of imagination.
  5. Thats funny, cuz you're not allowed to fly a black helicopter without one.
  6. When I vote, I vote democratic or sometimes further left like peace & freedom or even libertarian I'm pro-choice, pro-environment, Against large corporations and the neutron bomb. But when I'm stuck on the freeway and it's hot and someone cuts me off I think they outta fry that son of a bitch. Its the fascist in me (Learn to speak English, get a job, get a life. ) Its the fascist in me (Get rid of that smell, go back where you came from.) Its the fascist in me (You're a burden, you're a drain on the economy.) Its the fascist in me Its so distasteful going to the grocery store for some Haagendas on a Saturday night when you have to pass this vermin.. I give to 7 charities, I've played 5 different benefits in the past month. My bumper stickers say, "Save the whales" " visualize peace," "NPR" But when someone's rude in a restaurant, I'd like to make them look at the barrel of a gun and THEN we'd see how smug they are. Its the fascist in me (I'd run you naked through the middle of the town.) 7. Sounds like sour grapes to me, you old fox.
  8. Hey, right on, I've finally achieved the two star status!
  9. I believe MtnGoat gave an account of an attempted home invasion at his house (while he wasn't there) that was thwarted by his wife and her pistol. That was the first occurence of someone I know (sorta know, we haven't actually met) experiencing a home invasion, and this mosr recent event would qualify as a second one (someone who knows someone I sorta know). Still not common, but it takes the edge off my smug "hasn't happened to anyone I know" argument I've employed before. I do agree that the "how you gonna access that weapon" question is valid, and the risk of loaded weapons everywhere is definitely higher than the risk of home invasion. Still, it could be handy if you ever wanted to recreate some scene from a John Woo flick.
  10. What a tough choice. Dru's got it for volume, but he's light on anger, and what about providing real beta: is that a plus or minus? (I think its a plus, a master sprayer is well rounded) Trask is definitely off-topic master, the gross out king. He's certainly an enduring icon, but he's weak on the climbing blather. GregW is well rounded, wades into the endless political fray with gusto, he's quick with an insult, and likes to stir the shit, but c'mon, isn't he just a little toooo reasonable sometimes? DFA is still a relative newcomer, but it already seems like he's always been here. He's like those old Bozo boxing clowns, hit him in the nose and he pops right back up with that same smile (or is it a sneer?) on his face. He's also the sole liberal on the ticket, which raises the question: as in Talk Radio, can a liberal really spray or do they only sputter? Law Goddess is a plucky sort for sure, durable and gives back what she gets, but she doesn't have a killer instict with the slings and arrows, is she included on the list as part of an affirmative action program? And what about the various underdogs, Iain the pagetop snaffle king, Robbob the perky boxing platypus with a smirk, where was the primary that eliminated these folks? And I'd have to agree, its just not the real deal without Caveman on the ballot, unless you're gonna nominate him for a lifetime achievement award (but I don't think he's over the hill yet). When do the polls close? Who's handling the exit polling data? What talking heads can we round up for the commentary and analysis? Will CNN cover the results? Oh my, you can just feel the tension in the room....
  11. DFA, there's a killer overhanging sloperfest down in the moat on the left side. I dunno if the bolts will still be there next year, but when I did it you could clip the next one while the prior one was at your knees.
  12. If you're thinking cooking related stuff, I like a really good knife: its an indispensible tool and a high quality one makes the job more pleasant. I mean, who doesn't like big hunks of sharp steel?
  13. Naw Billygoat, we're just having our own conversation. I suspect Anna has moved on and isn't around much. The issue of fear versus judgement however will never go away.
  14. I suppose Boring, OR is a little bit dull.
  15. Ummm, thanks for sharing, I think.
  16. Muffy, both genders carry the virus, hence men are at risk for mouth cancer as are women, who have the added risk of cervical cancer. Of course, this is assuming the study means anything. The cervical cancer link is sounding pretty real.
  17. You mean "had" don't you? Not that she's dead, but the quality of her voice is. She can't hit those notes in White Rabbit anymore. The whole arc of the Jefferson Whatever band history would make for quite a soap opera.
  18. Trent Lott at Burning Man! Now thats an image. You're right though Tex, the silhouette does look like him, maybe he was doing undercover work.
  19. What, the Gapertimmy movie? Yeah, that was pretty good.
  20. Fear is my friend, it tells me to pay really close attention.
  21. I rope burned the snot out of my hands this summer, huge blisters on both hands. It was however a rope swing accident related to climbing only in that the rope was an old Mammut. Memo to myself: climbing rope makes a poor rope swing due to rope stretch. Other than that, I don't think I've been rope burned, even in days of yore when hip belays stalked the earth.
  22. Read the whole thread Klenke, it connects back to Greenwich Mean Time via the notion we have to let the Brits win something. Classical brilliant thread morphing if you ask me.

Boy, I really need that old laughing guy graemlin here. Sisu, you have the most inflammatory manner of stating fairly reasonable positions of anyone on this board! That's not an insult by the way, you're pretty entertaining to read. As my autosig might suggest, I'm not really down with the "higher power" bit and all, and the whole 12 step thing is a rich mine for humor, but I agree the program seems to work as well as anything out there, and I have it to thank for my foreman in my construction company who's a walking talking poster child for the possibility of personal redemption. Also, I think where I live around Olympia, polyglot PC liberal haven that it is, your "higher power" can be whatever you believe in, not strictly Christian. I'm pretty sure you can find an official Pagan meeting around here.
  24. I think Nixon's Watergate scandal changed all that. Since that time people have been on the lookout for what Presidents are up to, and it doesn't matter what party they belong to, they're usually up to something they don't want to talk about. Its part and parcel of the dichotomy of wanting to look like one thing and act like another. I think US Presidents have been this way for a long time, but much was overlooked out of "respect" for the office. One example: many people, including folks in the media, knew that John Kennedy was a major philanderer, much more so than Clinton, but it was not reported due to "respect for the office." I don't know that this new attitude is necessarily a bad thing, its better to make your leaders accountable than to idolize them.
