  1. I can't wait till the little guy can tie in and start rope-gunning for me on those Cascade 5.9+ A2s. You can bet I'll be reminding him about all that butt wiping then.
  2. We have defacto reproductive imperialism?! What the fuckers? Helpful babytime preparation hints: Buy 8 to 12 alarm clocks, and have a friend set them to go off at random intervals throughout the night. When an alarm goes off, leave it wailing, then pick up a ten-pound weight and cradle it for 15-60 minutes. During this time, go to the kithchen and heat up some water (continuing to hold the weight), then take a few minutes to pour it out (simulating a feeding). Now spill some sour yak milk down your shirt (simulating the inevitable outcome of every feeding). Go back to the bedroom and change your clothes twice (once to simulate having to change your baby's clothes--peeing on yourself during this process is optional, but may help you adjust to the realities of baby maintenance). Attempt to go back to sleep. Repeat this process or some variant thereof (it's like Crossfit--mix it up!) each time an alarm goes off. Continue this for about a month, after which time you may do away with half of the alarms. Don't forget to have fun! You probably think I'm exaggerating... I'll second this. After six months we're down to one time a night and are feeling like we might survive this phase. I may even have the energy to climb again this spring. If they weren't cute, we'd probably sell them into slavery.

    Unfortunate Names

A woman on the train this morning gave her ID to the fare inspector and he had to ask her how she pronounced her name. She said it was pronounced just like it was spelled . . . Strong Johnson.

I would loves me some Cruel Shoes too.
  5. I’ve had very good luck with the Nokia phones being dropped from up to six feet onto concrete. The covers pop off and the battery usually takes a flight, but they almost always power back up. In seven years I’ve lost one Nokia when the screen broke during an especially traumatic flight down a flight of concrete stairs. A leather case makes it really hard to break them in a tumbling drop. My current phone is the tri-mode Nokia 6015i with Verizon as the carrier. One nice feature of this phone is the retractable antennae which can significantly increase analogue signal strength in certain situations. Another plus is that this phone is free with Verizon activation. It doesn’t have a camera or any other bells or whistles, but it does make calls and survives drops (though probably not as well as the 444 might).

    TR: Oregon Gas

You get the quickest service if you get out of the car and start to fill it up yourself. By the time I get the gas cap off I've got at least one attendant standing next to me, asking what I want. Then I let them start filling it for me.
  8. Other than Rocky Butte, you'll have to drive a bit further. Horsetheif and French's Dome come to mind. Also Salmon River Slab if you don't mind climbing road cuts.
  9. Forget Happy Birthday, lets sing him something more appropriate: Special Birthday Song

  15. How do you explain Boston being the top city?
  16. You head into the Wallowas, you better be ready to climb more than road cuts and mossy boulders. There is some amazing granite up there, but its not for the inexperienced. Approach: Drive to Joseph, walk uphill.
  17. 0-60 in 5.9 and I averaged 26 mpg driving from City of Rocks to Portland on Saturday.
  18. They allow copies during business hours. Its a great resource.
  19. Egg-in-a-hole. With a side of whole wheat hole.
  20. I found the traverse to be the hardest part of that climb. The size of the crack, the exposure and rope drag probably added greatly to that feeling. The higher crux was easily worked around and seemed easier to me. I don't climb 5.9 cracks with any regularity, though, so I'd listen to those with more experience at the grade.
  21. We did a outdoor showing about three months ago in SE PDX. Its a good flick.
  22. Not sure about free camping as a lot of the dirt around there is on private property. My partner and I have a site in one of the official ones from May 21 through the long weekend. Good times.
  23. Its Spring Mountain and you can read all about it here: http://people.whitman.edu/~pogue/spring_mountain_guide.html You can get rain, snow, and sunshine this time of year and conditions tend to change quickly. The odds are against you for this weekend as they'll probably get stormed on.
  24. I'm hoping City of Rocks will be nice as that's where I'll be hangin.
  25. After using the holds on my wall for a couple of years I'm thinking of ways to spice things up a bit. If you have any interest, I've got a bunch of stuff I'd like to trade for something different. All sizes, shapes, and types up to 18" across and all bolt-ons (if that matters).
