I have that van with a 305 in it. I don't know what it was getting before I bought it but I replaced all the ignition stuff, spark plugs, wires etc and put the tallest tires I could get on the rear. I get 18-19 highway. It is an automatic. I had a 1960 Ford Falcon van that got 14 mpg when I was in MT decades ago. I put a 289 from a Maverick in it and got taller rims and the tallest tires all around. It got 27 highway fully loaded with gear and four climbers. It was a 3 speed manual. If I could find a manual transmission for this GMC I would consider it. But they also have a major transmission cooling system that would have to be plugged off. Detroit has no interest in producing high mpg cars. It isn't rocket science. You can do it in your back yard. Just get the right oomph to gear ratio.

I did it about ten years ago. It was mossy.

15" of Gropple on a 2" breakable crust, with 18" of powder under that. If it doesn't consolidate, things are going to be real prone to avalanche up there next weekend.

How about reality checks? When do they clear and how do you know?

If you are doing this in summer, water will be your biggest problem. Find a spot at top of the divide betwee Ingalls crk and Mountaieer crk. so you can get snow. The pass to the east of Sherpa is a great campsite and has snow late in the summer. I have not been to the pass on the west side of Sherpa. It will be a bit less than two hours from the summit of Stuart if you keep moving.

In Blodgette Swan Slabs are low angle 3 miles in and up 400 ft left (south). Blodgett falls is vertical for about 75 ft and low angle above. 3 miles in and 600 ft up right (north). Other smaller low angle flows exist in places along the way up. Fred Burr Crk. Several low angle flows starting at about 1.5 miles and up. A couple have short vertical steps. Thompson Falls MT I forget the name of it but it is 4 pitches of vertical to very steep climbing. at the confluence of the Clark Fork and Thompson river. Glacier park Bird Woman falls. 4 pitches vertical ice.

The R&D route in Icicle used to have a small tree as a top anchor. I used to solo up there and walk off. So I was up there when a group was rappelling off. There were about 5 of them and the last one was on his way down as I walked by the tree. It was hanging on by two one ince diameter roots into a crack filled with sand on a ledge. I sat down and pulled on the runner as hard as I could untill the guy got off and then I pulled the webbing.
