    Kalispell?

Hey, any of you know much about Kalispell, MT? (Serious) Good climbing? Biking? etc...
  2. Tremper's book is quite good. I own it an recommend it as an introductory avi book. It does exactly what it is intended to. But, because it is an intro book, it doesn't delve too deeply because it would be too much too soon. It sounds like a lot of the stuff I was looking for is in academic texts or journals. Off to the library...
  3. Hey all, I'm in the process of trying to learn (or learn how much I don't know) more about avalanche assessment. I've found that the intro books like "Staying alive in avalanche terrain" don't delve too deeply when it really comes down to understanding the 'why' in more than a phenomenlogical way. Any recommendations from the avi-savvy folks out there on more advanced books for the interested reader? I'm specifically looking for a good discussion of snow metamorphism and sets of case studies.
  4. What about people who fall into both categories and just don't care anymore? Isn't that kind of a fundamental component of an isolationist nation?

    The Ghost of DFA

    Shit, that's funny.
  6. Check the snow conditions, but some of the gullies and slopes on the way up to the saddle S of Middle Teton would be pretty fun for BC skiing.
  7. Don't have one to sell, but try and find an Arcteryx Bora 60.

    upwardly mobile

Kinda reminds me of the high score lists from video games.
  10. Check the NOAA page. There's supposed to be a cooling trend, so there might even be some good tree skiing later in the weekend. Of course, I'll be on snowshoes, so it won't matter.
  11. Pleeeeeze people. Some things are better for posting via PM's.... I guess after posting this, I better put the flame suit on.
  12. - study thermodynamics (ungh!). - avi class at mt. baker. - beer.
  13. Caveman, before you say that sending cruise missiles into factories is a good thing, make sure that you know what the situation was. It is pretty well documented that the pharmaceuticals plant in Sudan was not a chemical weapons factory. We had bad intelliegence and we messed up. The effect of this mistake is that hundreds of thousands of people are dying of preventable diseases. Does the US have a responsibility to make up for mistakes any less than any other country? A quote I heard once that really stuck with me was along the lines of, "many in the world do not hate the US for its values, but rather when the US departs from its values"
  14. As a sidenote, Luna should get a nomiation for rookie sprayer. At only 5 posts, she has garnered rebuttals from most of the big time sprayers on the site, and come back in good cc.com form. Spray on!
  15. Pull your head out of your ass DFA. The SOL came from France. My point was that playing the "how many times do we have to save their ass" game is stupid far from being the issue. It also gets at the distinction between nationalism ("flag waving morons) and patriotism. Patriotism is doing what you believe what is good for your country. Nationalism is blindly following the flag. If you are going to start blindly accusing people, make sure you are aware of what you are accusing.

    Dr. Flash & Trask

So, if you mix a Flash and a Trask, do you get a Flask? Sounds like a cover up for Jack Daniels to me...
  17. I find it interesting that the assumption is always Republican or Democrat, never Libertarian, Independent, Green or anything else. The amount of political stereotyping is quite amusing. I guess a question that comes out of that is: If you belive in democracy and vote by party, are you actually practicing democracy? Wouldn't democracy imply that a person should vote by issue, not by party? BTW- that ditty is some funny shit!
  18. Wait a second, where did the statue of liberty come from again?
  19. So, it's pretty damn easy to bag on the climbing rags- and fun too! But, if there were the 'ideal' magazine out there, what would you actually want to see? Something like Colin's Jberg TR? Maybe a good discussion of nutrition for alpine climbs? What kind of content would you want?
  20. Climbing mags are like playboy. A few nice pics, but nothing like the real thing... Nobody really reads the articles...
  21. I have a voile with a metal blade an it is awesome. A longer handle would be nice for digging platforms, etc, but certainly works well enough to keep me happy. Works well as a stove holder in the snow too. Has anyone tried jury rigging their regular probe into the handle on an existing shovel? If possible, that would solve a few problems at once. Glen
  22. Save your $15/yr and just pick up a copy of AAJ at a used bookstore. More pages, no ads and lots of good shiznit. But then again, I stopped reading the rags about 6 or 7 years ago and havn't looked back. I'd rather look at pics of friend's trips and hear the stories about moonlight ice climbs, blizzards in J Tree, epic Yosemite days and trips to the cascades, than read a mag about another V-32.74 problem in France or the like. Shit, for the cost of a mag for a year, you can damn near get another guidebook and plan yourself a trip.
  23. Sounds like they took Twight's book a wee bit too seriously. What was the quote, "Fun doesn't have to be fun?" Nonetheless, that's a pretty ambitious attempt. Best of luck! Hope they bring enough

    Traskian Epiphany

Yeah, there's problems with his philosophy too. But, that's not really the point. There's almost always something to pick apart in any novel. We could do plenty of that with Abbey's work too, esp. Desert Solitaire. But, it would be a bit counterproductive to throw the baby out with the dishwater. I think that ZAMM was far less "70's psychobabble' than Abbey and is still pretty relevant today. From talking to people about ZAMM, they tend to fall into 2 groups: those that read it and really like it and those that get partway in and drop it (or finish it by brute force of will alone). I think people get that way with the Spray section on CC.com too...
