    Classic!

to float, it would have to be pumice, not welded tuff... though pumice shards may be found in welded tuff.

    Classic!

5 tons is about 2 cubic meters of solid rock. About the size of your desk. Ouch!
  4. I have one kenwood CD player for a car if anyone wants it. It has 4X35w, detachable faceplate and pretty good tuner with whirlygigs ... but the CD player doesn't work. It MAY be fixable with a little bit of cleaning. It has the instructions and wiring harness. If anyone needs a radio for their car with a maybe fixable CD player, it's yours-- FREE. <- Snaffle-concert
  5. Sounds like the conditions near Chair Peak on saturday morning/early afternoon... crap. A nice day of wandering around and being out of the city, but not good turns.

    Bike Thieves Suck

I think old west horse-stealing rules should apply. "Get a rope" It is probably worth your time to call a few of the used bike shops in town and mention that your particular make/color of bike was stolen. Longshot, but I've heard of longer shots paying off with stolen bikes.
  7. there's a few transcievers for sale on the MEC Outdoor Gear Swap page right now for pretty cheap.
  8. This weekend's Avi forecast Looks like it'll be pretty hit and miss. Look out for those weak layers on protected and lee aspects!

I guess it's a good thing she's not an english teacher... then we'd all be in trouble... 15. Why doesn't good ice form at equivalent elevations in southern california? Because it is at a lower latitude and warmer (more direct solar radiation). IN general, the further north you go, the colder it is at a given elevation. Another way of thinking of this, is that the freezing level (in elevation) drops at you go north. So, if you have lower elevations (generally true for mean elevation in southern cascades) at lower latitudes, it should be warmer. For example, even though they are at similar latitudes, there is good ice in lee vining canyon at 7500' but not in bishop at 4,000' in CA. In WA, ice flows regularly form at alpental at 3,000'. On a longer time scale, this is referred to as the ELA (equilibrium line altitude), or the elevation at which the mean annual temperature is 0*C. Latitudinal effects Local effects? of course. If there are consistent easterly winds bringing in cold air, you can get cold temperatures locally that will help freeze those flows. How much maritime influence is there (warm air from ocean)? Shady, or sunny? ... .... ... The occurence of bowls in the rockies helping form ice is a bit of a circular argument as many of those features are relict glacial features.
  16. I have taken a course. It was great and well worth the money. I just have some areas that I want more info on. It goes without saying that being around experts is a much better way to learn than figuring out on your own from books. I think I'll have to wait until next season to take a more advanced course (ahhh, if only money and extra time grew on trees). The course I took was Gary Brill's avi I course (3 classes plus a field day). It was good and certainly had a lot of sweet shots of b/c freshiez!
  17. TG, do you have a photo to post of the 'yak?
  18. Considering swtiching over from the Dark Side (snowboarding) to skis. AT setups seem a bit better to me than telemark as my knees and tele skiing havn't gotten along that well in the past. Curious if there are any recommendations out there for a good intro setup, and a good way to get set up for not too much dough. Looking to do primarily b/c in the cascades, so a setup that won't ice up too badly, and will handle crud. My skiing abilities are pretty meager so high performance will probably be more of an issue in a later set of skis after the first set have been beat to death and I have a better idea of what I want. thanks!
