google is my copilot I think the NOAA websites are some of the coolest geek sites on the web. You can find all kinds of neat pictures and datasets. You want a picture of a tropical storm or hurricane with your name? I bet they have one. You want monthly precipitation for some obscure corner of the world for the last 50 years? got it. US taxpayers money well spent in my opinion

an option not mentioned for dealing with an inexperienced companion is to hang both of you off one rap device rescue style. I think the Fasulo self-rescue book illustrates. If getting established on the rappel (eg. low anchors off a ledge) I will often tie a big knot on a bight about 10 feet below the anchor to catch me if I lose control while getting down onto the rope. Once I get the system weighted I undo it. Also sometimes hitch together slings to make an etrier to downclimb below the anchor.

does the word 'hueco' have a specific geologic meaning? Cause I have seen it applied to large gas pockets in tuff, eroded dishes in granite, and solution pockets in limestone.

if you are the kind of person who thinks the approach to Cat in the Hat or Crimson Chrysalis is long you will probably end up bivying on Jubilant Song . I wouldn't recommend it as a "I only have one day to climb what should I do?" route. It's not off the loop road though, so no worry of getting a ticket if you epic. I really enjoyed Geronimo, but it requires greater than average skills at avoiding rappel clusters. The descent is down a chimney with a reputation.

I am not interested Dr. Flash Amazing. Buzz off. I hope that Toast has fun learning to lead and benefits from the advice on this thread. This board is a valuable resource but is not a replacemnet for reading guidebooks, many of which have star/skull systems to provide exta info about the quality and safety of the climbs. This board is not a replacement for learning to route-find based on reading a topo and assessing the climb from the ground and while you are on it. I don't think you get much more out of collecting a list of route names off the internet than you could get by researching a guidebook. If I am asked "what are some good first leads" my first response will always be "read the guidebook and look for the easy climbs with lots of stars". A more specific question will get a more specific answer. I apologize if I insulted Toast, that was not my intent. Sometimes I fail to check my sarcasm and surliness. That is my problem and not anyone else's.

I had one freakish occurence once with a long sling, where when I fell the biner spun around the rope and the sling tied itself into a sort of klemheist that started to catch my fall before the belayer did. If it had cinched completely tight it would have paralyzed the belay - no taking rope in or out.

Obviously I have too much time on my hands I would have thought the most logical response would have been for her to suggest some destinations or routes that she considers scrambles.
