  1. One mistake I've read so far in the online reports is use of feminine pronouns when quoting Clair Israelson. Clair is a man.
  2. i would go.
  3. >> Erik Snyder, 38
  4. I thought the selective elimination of posts from the Big 4/Colonial thread was a bit strange and capricious.
  5. the stars are not so relevant. The more interesting measure is how many people could actually be bothered to rate you in the first place.
  6. if ever this "bar thing" is organized somewhere like Everett or Bellingham then I will drive down. No frou-frou venues, pick somewhere we can whistle at sailors

    Sportiva Ice

FWIW I have nepal top extremes. They are good and quite warm. I also have Salomon SM9 (Snow and Rock) which are more comfortable and feely but not insulated so not ideal for cold ice days. Supergaiters + foam between sole and crampon helps a little. In small boot sizes it is more important to make sure that the crampons are compatible. For example, I found that the lanier style 2Fs don't work because the small boot toe protrudes through the plastic toe-cage thing out almost as far as the front-points. I found that Switchblades didn't work with the asymmetric last on the SM9s and the heel of the crampon worked its way off sideways. I found that Rambos just barely adjust small enough to fit my sz38s ... I might have to drill new holes for the heel bail.
  9. I think mid-August is usually flower season, but I would contact Parks Canada in Lake Louise to ask them. Twice I've been in Lake Louise and the Moraine Lake trail has been closed or limited because of bears. Sometimes they close it altogether and other times only allow groups of minimum (6?) size in. Moraine Lake is only about 3miles from the road but there are loop trails and such. these people make nice maps these people are paid to answer your questions
  10. textile outfitters I dunno how prices compare.
  11. as if that wasn't predictible. yawn.
  12. I had 4 stars for a long time. Someone must have felt threatened by my xtreem popularity. I'm pretty sure I know who it was too. Whatever. the new 5 is 3 yo!
  13. wait a few years and the rest of industry will have introduced the new secret system they've been cooperating on, the one that eliminates the duck-bill boots.

    Near Hope

check for yourself bc road reports
  19. That's interesting. I was there on the Dec 20th and it sounds like the only formations that have improved since then are the 2nd and 3rd tiers. There are actually 3 or 4 hoses running, Waite For Spring is farmed. When I was there I also got the impression that IcyBC was a victim of water piracy. I was also very nervous about how stable and well adhered the new central sheet would be in these middling temperatures. It'd be good if you passed on your advice about flow volumes etc. to those people who set the hoses. I think it's an interesting experiment, and it would be a lot to expect it to be perfect the first time.

    a story

the world tumbles between yellow and blue. I can't control much and with my feet higher than my head to try to swim would only take me deeper into the blue. I can't think of much but I know that my only hope is that this ride ends in the yellow world, the yellow sunlight not far away. I spit out a mouthful of snow. I focus closeup on my black glove directly in front of my face. Around me it slows, my feet get pushed a little higher and now I'm not moving anymore and now the world is blue. A few disjointed thoughts ... my mother, my friends, my stupidity. My glove is right there, practically touching my mouth, I push my hand away and think maybe I shouldn't bother since it might just be better just to suffocate sooner rather than later... Looking through slides at home one picture catches me. I only vaguely remember taking it. The apex of my tent taken from lying in my sleeping bag. The yellow fabric looks dark from the snow and slightly foggy from the steam coming off our ramen dinner. A moment of welling frustration and storm-fed boredom. I know every mark and thread of that roof too well. I push my hand away and the snow gives a little bit of yellow light. I push harder and my hand breaks clear. "Can you breathe?" anxious ...I can breathe "Can you breathe?" checking ...I can barely breathe, not enough to answer, I move my hand for a sign "god Can you breathe?" relief "my...back...can't...breath...much" "OK just a minute" he moves some snow, accidentally burying my face again ... I find the energy to push it away, the smothering is too much, I clear my face. "I'm so exhausted" he slumps over me, can't catch his own breathe "please...James...my...back" near tears, dizzy, no room to expand my chest He digs, it seems to take so long. Bit by bit parts of me are freed, my back is clear and I drink in deep breaths of the thin air. "I'm going to roll you over hang on" he grabs my harness and pulls. I'm out and collapse sobbing on his shoulder. "can we go down now James?" "Yes"
  22. how big is your kid? maybe get the lightest full length thermarest, and fold it to half-length/double-thickness for him or just use it normal style for yourself when he's not along. a small person might find the bulkiness of a foam pad or ridgerest strapped on their pack just as awkward as the extra few grams of a more compact t-rest.
  23. I agree ... the pretzel backwardo is pretty touchy. I find that with two ropes stuffed in there they bind against each other and there's often way too much friction. Having your ropes swell up with water would just compound that. But it sounds in this case like the friction was coming from the directional? You probably wouldn't have problems catching a fall with a re-directed hip belay if you take care to keep the rope fairly tight at all times.
  24. next weekend I will go either ice climbing in lillooet or skiing on the Duffey. I have a partner but you are welcome to come too if all else fails. I have to work this week though
