I saw a guy head up the mountain from Camp Muir in cowboy boots. This was after I saw a bunch of Secret Service guys usher Al Gore off the mountain. That was a weird day.

I agree...guiding services on Rainier has reached critical mass, but Eric is right - there is much more at stake here than RMI, Mountain Madness, etc. etc. If you start allowing more private businesses at Paradise, Longmire and Sunrise those two lane roads may become four and parking lots increase in size (there is an overcrowding problem already). RMI guides get a bad rap, but realize they have a tough job to do. They aren't allowed the comfort of weeding clients out prior to the trip. One of my bud's put it this way, "Every morning I wake up knowing six people will try to kill me today." I have issues with RMI as well, but it's misdirected blame if you're pointing fingers at guides for policy issues.

To clarify what I mean about "looking at the ceiling"... I actually instruct people to look at a point on the wall that might be a couple of feet above how tall they are standing...which sometimes might be where the wall meets the ceiling...not directly above their heads. Everyone has their own way, it's not as black and white as we're making it sound. Cheers. [ 02-27-2002: Message edited by: Figger Eight ]

Keeping your head back is just a way to cue people to retain a neutral spine in this lift. Unless you have someone standing there watching you, it's easy to round your back off and transfer the weight of the barbell from the big muscles in your hip girdle and a stabilized spinal column, to the small muscles in your lower and middle back. As long as you're conscious of not hyper-extending your back, the trade-off between a possible touch of cervical next strain vs. potential lower back injury is acceptable. Bronco, if you're starting your lift in a poor position, you're putting undo strain on a bunch of muscles just to get in a good position to do the lift. Just my dos centavos. Lameboner - the key word is: "used" to...as in years ago. That's why they are currently part of a brand family that includes bra makers and Wrangler jeans(among other reasons). And to all the REI bashers...if you needed spare parts for your stove, freeze dried food, an extra headlamp battery and a titanium spork all by this weekend, you would go to REI and you know it!

Hey Director of Lameness - Lifetime Warranty means the lifetime of the PRODUCT not the owner...this is straight from the mouth of one of OR's quality control managers while we were drinking beers in Ballard. I used to work retail myself and would simply laugh at some jack ass who would try to bring in a fifteen year old coat that was falling apart. Blown stitching can be attributed to wear and tear, but most companies will fix it simply because they want the reputation of having good customer service. Carolyn...you should be more careful with your money if you're spending it on some joker who tells you never to belay off your harness. I agree with MattP. Many times I'll have a lighter climber belay me from an anchor if it is not in an ideal position, but is bomber nonetheless. I might put them on an independent anchor, but that's better than them getting strung up like they're on a clothesline if I were to fall.
-
When I'm belaying someone much lighter than me, I might leave a little bit more slack in the line to allow more stretch in the rope so they don't "jerk" to a stop. Also if it's steep and overhanging I will allow more rope between the leader and I so the leader doesn't swing into the wall if he/she falls - especially if it's right after a clip. I belay off my body as much as I can. I'd rather my harness and body take some of the force before it's transferred to my anchors.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone employ the turn and run strategy successfully. I've seen a bunch of people totally eat shit and start tumbling though. A long slide is better than a long tumble.
