It was my understanding they found his body last year, during the low snow season.

quote: South side is a hacked-up ladder in season, you won't be front-pointing up anything, and there's nothing resembling steep on the route...maybe 30 deg 35 tops.I dunno...later in the season the upper part (above the schrund) gets icy, or its ice under a thin layer of corn early in the morning. It made me feel better to have mine on. It's certainly not frontpointing, but it made it easier...especially if you're a newbie and your self-arrest ain't the greatest.

St. Helens Climbing Fees: views of a ranger
Figger_Eight replied to aggressivepedestrian's topic in Climber's Board
quote: Unlike his partner, this second ranger was pretty cool.Unfortunately, some of the rangers in our parks have become bit jaded about non-permit carrying climbers. For as many conscientous protesters climbing the mountain, there are twice as many jack asses cursing out rangers just to be a tough guy. I've been busted a few times without having a permit, and each time I had a good conversation about permitting with the ranger. Many of them are nice guys who just want to work outdoors. There has to be a limit to the number of people crowding the mountains in the summer. Whether or not you should pay a fee is a different story. And IMO - all 'biles should be outlawed on St. Helens. Straight shaft Carbon Fiber Black Prophets on sale at Black Diamond's website for $159 bucks. It's hard to beat this one.

Waterproof the fabric...on a single wall tent? It's the seams that leak. A bead of seam sealer works great. You shouldn't have to waterproof the fabric itself.

Easy Dan...I hear the DC route is shaping up nicely right now. Redirect all that angst and go climb your favorite mountain.

quote: Was that in bad taste?Yeah...but pretty funny. If you're talking about Hood, I was there the night before and decided it would be dumb to climb...hindsight's always 20/20 though. BTW - my girlfriend just told me TNF has Alex Lowe's picture plastered all over the walls at Nordstrom's above their urban outerwear. One of the salespeople saw her looking at it, approached her and said, "Yeah...isn't that sooo cool?" Right...pretty cool. What a great memorial...

There's more rock and dirt than snow. The snow will be firm in the morning, and mushy in the afternoon. You'll be camping in dirt. Follow the WELL established trail to the top and glissade in the bobsled run on the way down. It's about as easy as it gets.

They've already started shuttling people up from Ashford. You aren't allowed to park your car overnight at Paradise unless you have reservations in one of the campgrounds below, or in one of the inns. Try a less crowded route.

I did a scouting trip up the road on Saturday and got just past Beverly Campground before the snow started, leaving 9 more miles to the parking lot.

Kick ass MattP. We're buying the beers tonight.

				help with Permits... somewhat urgent...
Figger_Eight replied to midwestern_alpine_hero's topic in Mount Rainier NP
I believe the two zones on the Muir are the Muir snowfield alpine zone, above Pebble Creek but not quite to Muir. The Muir zone is, well, Camp Muir. Alex has a good plan for your goals - practice on the Nisqually then resupply for the summit. My advice is by-pass Camp Muir and bust straight up to Ingraham Flats. You'll get a headstart on the DC cattle drive in the morning, and there are less people there. -
	Mahalo.

				How many miles 'till retirement?
Figger_Eight replied to Bronco's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
quote: "dead" shoes are great to use for lifting...if you don't have any biomechanical deficiencies in your feet, or if you have flat feet you use arch supports in them. If you are a pronator or supinator and wear 'dead' shoes (without additional support) to squat, lunge, deadlift or any other standing exercise, you're prone to the same injuries sustained if you were to run in them...don't you think Court? Everything else being equal, that's a great idea to get some longevity out of your running shoes. Ideally that's all you'll be using them for. -
I vote we take it back to the Swiss...but this debate will rage till Tuesday afternoon so who cares what I say.

I saw his slide show last year and was friggin' blown away. He is one of the craziest bastards ever.
