  1. I checked with my dad. There is an inconvenient gap in the family catalog of NG issues. We started getting it in '67 but the early '68 issues are missing. My mother said these were probably lost or never sent while my parents were moving (I was not yet born). However, my dad has every NG issue on CD-ROM. He said he'd try and find the issue in question. I told him to look for information relevant to the cover photo. We (I) know where the photo is taken from/to, but I'm not sure if it is the exact summit of Magic.
  2. More fun will be had at Peso's tonight than at the Flailiners game. Sucker. Plus, we'll be able to watch the Moroners on TV.
  3. I meant republican.
  4. Hey Josh, I'm curious if there are any issues out there where you agree with the republican stance. Just curious.
  5. Here is another source saying it's the May 1968 issue. The cover photo is taken looking east (probably from Magic Mountain) to Trapper Lake. Glory Mountain is beyond the lake and McGregor Mountain is the high peak in the distance below the O and G in "Geographic."
  6. My parents have all the old Natl. Geographic Magz in their garage starting from about the late 60's. No guarantees, but I could have them check for the issue and photography info therein but you'll have to be a little more specific on the year. If you can narrow it down to a specific year, I may be able to get some answers for you. The park was created in 1968, so the issue might be from that year.

    Flaming SUVs

The problem with this axiom in this case is I doubt the guy doing the SUV torching knew what the sentence would be if he got caught. This in no way excuses him from those acts, though. 22 years for $40,000 damage. Sounds ridiculous to me in spite of how it might compare to corporate looting, et al. On its own terms, 22 years for $40k is pretty darn harsh. However, on the flip side, if you can equate his actions to a form of domestic terrorism (a valid argument), you could reason that setting a strong precedent was warranted. Furthermore concerning the numbers, think of what it will cost the goverment to feed, clothe, and house this guy for 22 years. If, say it costs even a measly $30,000 per year (which is likely low), and say he gets out for good behavior in 7 years, then it will still have costed the government >$200,000 to keep him incarcerated for what amounted to 1/5 the monetary damage in the first place. I don't know. Just food for thought. I'm certainly not a judge but, in my way of thinking, I would say this act he got caught for ought to have a penalty of about 2 years in jail and $100,000 in fines/damage reparations.
  8. The bisesquiholiyear is over. Time to get back to the 9 to 5 grind. But before then I need to drink away the thought of it. I will be having a drink or two or three at Peso's (605 Queen Anne Ave N) starting around 8:00PM. Come and join me if you like. Some of your drinks may be on me.
  9. Well, I never thought about it before... But I did find this: butte, in geology "an isolated hill with steep sides and a flat top, resulting from the more rapid erosion of the surrounding areas. Buttes are characteristic of the plains of the W United States. See mesa." So a butte is always a peak but a peak is not always a butte.

    Land!

Uh, sorry E, but that looks suspiciously like old Indian burial ground. Click here for more info.
  12. "100 people every year dying on Mont Blanc." A little math for you: 100 years x 100 per year = 10,000 dead on Mont Blanc. Damn, we better chop that menace down before it kills us all! More likely the mountain kills 5-10 per year, probably even less than that on average.

  14. Ah, but how do you know we don't see eye-to-eye on political matters? What are my political views? I am immune to your posting style. Your style can't hurt me.
  15. Martlet: don't stir up shit with Josh just because you and he don't see eye-to-eye on political matters. He was simply doing us a service by pasting the requirements into a post. I could have done that, but then I only bumped it for Scott & Laura's use.

  17. bumped for Icegirl and Harpell.
  18. I wonder what our very own would say about this?
  19. Re: This 90% number I just did a search on the keywords "Abu Ghraib Red Cross percent" and got several results out saying pretty much the same thing. Here is one example. The Red Cross reported that they were told by military officials that 70-90 percent of detainees were arrested by mistake. This obviously implies that these 70-90 percent were not guilty of whatever it was they were initially arrested for (although, this by no means exculpates them from other transgressions unknown to the military). So, the Red Cross did not do any analysis. They were simply given that data from the military. This means the military did the analysis. In some way they (the military) must have been able to ascertain a detainee's innocence to the transgression they were arrested for, but not necessarily for what they weren't arrested for. I don't know what this process was. Forgive me, Ratboy, if this is not the percentage source you were talking about. ------------------------- It's tough out there in Iraq. Not everything goes smoothly. Soldiers out in the field risk their lives every day hunting down insurgents. I'm willing to cut them some slack for erroneously arresting innoncent Iraqis. Although, a 70-90 percent error rate is pretty darn high.
  20. Yes. The traverse has been done but not personally by me. Friends of mine traversed over to Jonathan from David, reporting no difficulties. If you go to wta.org, click on "Trip Reports" at top-right, then type in Whittier in the search box, two trip reports for the area will come up. The second by Mike Collins appears to be a traverse not unlike the one you queried about. Note: this thread really belongs in the North Cascades Forum as the Poets Range is north of Stevens Pass.
  21. Fairweather: it would be interesting to me to hear your take on lobbyists in congress. To me, lobbying is nothing more than legalized bribery.

    No Class

You were joking putting shrub's name in there, right? Cuz I certainly hope you weren't lowering him to the despicability of those other three + castro (Castro isn't as bad as Hit, Sta, or Osa). If you weren't joking and truly would celebrate his death then I think you had better move to some country where patriotism is not acceptable. Hyperbole for sure. Like I've said before, you can disagree with a countryman's political policies, but to celebrate his passing because you didn't like his policies says more about your own pathetic being than the respectibility of the politician.
  23. The creed of the cc.commie losers among us: "Show me a saint and I'll show you a skeleton in a closet." This is a hard question to answer but I know three things for sure: it isn't James Garfield because he only served for 6 months or Zachary Taylor (less than 2 years in office)and most definitely not William Harrison (only one month in office before dying of pnemonia). From what I know of history, I would choose Lincoln as the best President in U.S. history because of the risks and sacrifices he had to make to save our (entire) country from itself. Lincoln was the first Republican President. I would then choose Teddy Roosevelt or Franklin Delano Roosevelt next. George Washington's military accomplishments seem to overshadow his Presidential achievements. None of the Presidents after FDR have held much esteem to me but I would offer Reagan more credit than the liberal yahoos on this site. Kennedy gets props for his thwarting of missiles to Cuba. I don't know. I respect them all...even Clinton. I would be sad if Clinton were to die tomorrow.

    Ronald Reagan

If that's what you say about Ronald Reagan, I wonder what that says about you.
