It was the Kingsmen version that went to #2 on the Billboard.

  10. Slothrop,In a nutshell:Fee demo is thought by many to be double taxation. We pay taxes to the Feds and are being asked to pay a fee to an agency that is supposed to be financed by the Feds. In addition, there is a coalition of outdoor industry businesses that have (and still are)providing major incentive and input into the program. This is seen as an attempt to privatize and therefore commercialize our national forest lands. There is also a feeling that the other users of public lands (mining and logging interests for example) are not really paying a realistic fee to the forest service compared to what they get out of the land. BTW, the idea of bathrooms in high-use areas has some merit considering the large quantities of human feces that are "planted" in the ecosystem without them.

Distance driving to where you park is irrelevant.” Scottp simply imagine this two: people one at point A the other at point B. One is 35 miles from a trailhead. The other 3 hours. Now further assume their goal destination (point C) is a 5 mile hike from the trailhead. Now each person at his respective starting point begins their journey towards point C. I will not waste my time further specifying the details of how they journey, I am sure we know who will arrive first.(snip) Perhaps you should think of it as spending the time creating a cogent argument.Assuming these persons are both driving, it matters not which is the further drive. They will both be doing a five mile hike. It is the hiking distance that was at the center of the debate, not where people choose to live in relation to where they choose to climb.

These classy and erudite responses received the responses they deserved. I am assuming your post was sincere and not and attempt at being a smart ass or the result of a mordant personality.(snip). Yeah, my post was sincere. No sarcasm intended.Retro stated an opinion on decreasing ease of access to what is undeniably an overused area. You respond by calling him selfish because he has quicker and easier access to the area in question (What, does he live at the trailhead?) I fail to see how anyone can have quicker access to an area when they can go no further on a closed road than anybody else. Distance driving to where you park is irrelevant. "His main motivation seems to reduce “others” ability to easily access an area..."I see his motivation as wanting a reduction of "everyones” easy access to stop further degradation of a really nice place. What is selfish about that?
  21. I have no idea how much it weighed, but an alpine pack, 5 degree bag, bivy sack, pad, shovel, whisperlite stove, pot, the usual layers of clothes, and food. I also was skiing with tele skis, skins and leather boots. It was pretty light. I usually carry more amenities (extra pad, clothes, food, booze.) [ 03-09-2002: Message edited by: ScottP ]
  22. quote: Originally posted by max: Ok, this is start. It seems there must be something more about an entablature ledge than just being at the top of the stack. Is it the different structure of the rock? There must be a more technical definition. (I'm not trying to be a wise-cracker here. Just curious.) dave brannon It is my understanding that the variation in cooling between the upper layer and the lower layer of a thick basalt flow provides the difference in structure. The lower part is called a colonnade and typically shows signs of columnar jointing due to shrinkage as it cooled from the bottom up. The upper part is the entablature and its hacked up structure is a result of cooling due to water seeping into the fractures at the top of the flow. That is about the extent of my knowledge on the subject.
  23. quote: Originally posted by vegetablebelay: Izzat the light green or the dark green Well, I'm color blind, so I don't see the green. The columnar stuff on the lower part of the formation is the colonnade and the upper stuff is the entablature.
  24. quote: Originally posted by max: What is an entablature ledge? I'm somewhat familiar with thte geology/physics of the basalt flows, but have never encountered this term. Could you explain? Thanksdave brannon It's the upper part of a basalt flow.
